I’ve been playing around with doing some western riding with my (WB) mare. We’re having a blast, but I know absolutely nothing about it*. Does anyone know of a forum or website I could get some useful information from?
COTH has totally spoiled me. All the forums I’ve been able to find by google searches seem to be populated by illiterate 12 year olds and I’m looking for solid information.
*Yes, we are taking some lessons, but I need my horsey fix online, too.
Just a thought, but there are about as many different disciplines of Western riding as there are English. You might have better luck finding something if you specify what you’re looking for. IME, the basics tends to be very similar, so if you want a real discussion of differences (tack, aids, and the application therof), you kind of need to narrow down to technicalities of a particular discipline.
Western Riding, capitalized, is a class…so you are going to have to be more specific. (BTW, it’s a very cool class. Google it and you’ll see the pattern work involved, lots of lead changes, very controlled.)
That said, go to the Pleasure Horse Journal forum and they might help you out. It’s pretty active, and primarily about the western events.
Try the Eclectic Horseman boards… primarily focused on working ranch horse, reining, etc., but a lot of knowledgeable people.
I second pleasurehorse. Lots of trainers hang out there and aren’t at all shy about answering questions.
Yes, go to pleasure horse! Lots of great information from very knowledgeable sources: trainers, breeders, ect.
I have recently started going to pleasurehorse and love it! It is very friendly and there is not much drama. The training advice is very good. I used to go to eclectic horseman but not much is happening on that board anymore. Sadly, there are not very many good western boards. Most of them have a lot of kids and rednecks on them.

You’re right about being more specific, but we’re just getting started and I’m not really sure what I want to do yet. I guess I was kind of hoping to get a feel for what’s out there and then decide.
You might enjoy Western Horseman magazine, too. My non-riding husband has a subscription, mainly because he likes looking at the custom tack and equipment and the pretty horses. I like the training discussions and glimpses into a broad spectrum of disciplines.
