So I am thinking about doing a local saddle clubs queen contest this spring and they said to wear what you wear for a western pleasure class. I use to do some local showing about 10 years ago but haven’t kept up with the popular attire. I was thinking about getting some black chaps and a black vest with some bling on it and a bright colored shirt to wear underneath along with a bright colored saddle pad and a a black hat. I seen the neck scarfs might be popular at this time would that be something to add? Is something like that still acceptable? I will be riding a black and white paint horse.
You’d be fine. Most rule books specify a long sleeve western style shirt with a collar. Have fun!
Check out the hobby horse to get an idea of what’s in fashion, then check eBay or other places for used outfits, knockoffs etc. don’t forget sale sections. The Goodwill online had a pair of Hobby Horse black chaps a few months back for $10!
Have fun and post some pics!
Be careful that you don’t have too much black along with your horse’s coloring. Light colored hats (well shaped) are popular and I find they brighten up the exhibitor’s face (makes a HUGE difference in the appearance). I’d look at world show videos on youtube to give you an idea of what’s “in.” I like showmeagain.com- some very expensive clothing, but I find a deal once in a while there.
Traditional vests are not “in” right now in pleasure. The corset type vests are somewhat.

Attire you would wear for showing is going to be different that what you were for a rodeo queen pageant.

No chaps for horsemanship in a queen pageant.
Scarfs are popular right now.
Some vests are in right now, but not for a horsemanship portion of a pageant.
Do you have a coach you are working with? If not, start by asking rodeo queens who have been successful in pageants to mentor you. Or they can at least refer you to someone who can mentor you.
Check out the Miss Rodeo America website and Facebook page. Miss Rodeo America sets the standard for all other pageants.
I would also check with your state association, look at their website and Facebook page. See what the winners are wearing.
Go watch some pageants before you compete in yours.
Will you have to do a speech? Interview questions? Modeling? Etc?
Will you just wear one outfit the whole time or will you need a formal outfit for the interview portion?
You can also check out this website, as it’s very helpful:

Also, go on Facebook and fine “Queens in Jeans”. Very helpful page as well.
