Western Showmanship Help!

I am going to be showing in Showmanship under a judge who asks the showers questions; the way they answer helps decide the placings of the class. So, I am asking if you guys could post a bunch of questions you think he might ask. His questions have to do with horse knowledge you should know. He has asked, for example, the amount of ribs a horse has, how often and when you worm a horse, where different parts of a horse are, and what is a mare’s gestation period etc… The more questions the better! Throw them all at me! Even the difficult ones or the ones he probably won’t ask. Include the answer too in case I can’t figure it out . Thanks!

daughter used to do western showmanship … remembering your horse’s name would be helpful LOL

here are a few links to the beginning of the AMHA Youth program workbooks…lots of good information

The only time that ever happened to my kids showing, the judge used it as a tie breaker and personally, I thought it was an unfair question. The question was: “What’s the horse’s most important joint?” The judge wanted the contestants to answer “Stifle.” To me, that’s an opinion --not a fact. But I could be biased. My granddaughter answered hock --and was given second place.

we have had several western horses where Beer would have been their most important joint

might ad…listen to just what the judge says and directs you to do… daughter won a class back east because she was the only one who did specifically what the judge said… judge was telling the handlers to turn right and return to the line up… problem was the judge was on the right of the horse looking at the horse/handler and was meaning her right not the horse’s right… daughter did as the judge requested (she was six at the time so what the heck) turned horse into judge knocking her back

When I did showmanship back in the day the judge would occasionally ask exhibitors for their numbers. I heard tell that not knowing the number could knock you out of or down in the placings.

Granted, I have never shown at a large breed show or anything, but I have NEVER been asked a knowledge question (or any question at all) in a showmanship class before! Interesting…

With that said, I did rodeo queen competitions way back when and knowledge questions were part of your horsemanship score. And they could ask any and everything. You could google rodeo queen questions and come up with lots of lists. Of course, you could ignore the rodeo questions, but there’s always lots of question on equine science and anatomy!

OP didn’t state the type of show, but I wondered if it were 4H or something? Sounds like something 4H would do.

I showed 4-H and then breed shows as I got better as a youth and once won a fair medallion class because I always stuck a little folding hoof pick in a back pocket and the the judge asked us to pick out a hoof. This was the late 80s. Hobby Horse pants didn’t hit the 4-H level until the 90s where I grew up.
