Turn out blanket was professionally cleaned and waterproofed this fall. Previously I’d done it myself. I noticed that the lower half of each side is not waterproof: water soaks in and then can turn icy as the temp drops. The poor horse had basically a sheet of ice against his lower ribcage and upper legs! Is it normal for people who do this professionally to just waterproof the top side? I’m waiting for a response from her.
And now even weirder is that I noticed a brand new blanket of a different but name brand is doing the same thing?
What is going on?
Is it possible that the horse is laying down in a damp spot and moisture is wicking up the inner liner? I’ve had that happen a few times but usually just spots on the lower edge.
Sometimes the wash in waterproofer doesn’t ’take’ right. I’ve started using spray on alongside wash in because of this. I like the nikwax brand for both.
Oooohhh I didn’t realize Nikwax made a spray on! I might need to try it
I have a couple of sheets that I’ve had professionally waterproofed where the waterproofing still failed. I think one of them I tried to waterproof again and it still failed. They are both retired now.
Which is too bad because one of them is an old Weatherbeeta freestyle that fit GREAT and they don’t make them any longer.
They have two; one that is (I’m pretty sure) the same product as the wash in but in a spray bottle. That’s what I use. But they also have one called waxproof and it is spray on wax. If you have a blanket that just will NOT waterproof that stuff can work wonders! But it will wash off when it’s washed in the washer again.
Rust-oleum and Scotchgard also make waterproof fabric protectors in a spray bottle. I think I got mine from HomeDepot last year.
I use this stuff and it even works after the blanket gets washed once or twice.

I may try both then! I’ve used that stuff with the orange lid from Wal Mart and it kinda works.
I’ve used the regular Nikwax wash in waterproofing too and it’s been fine. Just a bit of a pain to do by hand in muck tubs.
