The FEI has made their decision about Charlotte. The video evidence about Dr. Parra was revealed months earlier. What’s holding up a decision there?
Excellent question. I was wondering the same thing. But, he’s a man of course, so no need to make a big deal of it, right?/s
Maybe it’s taking longer to come out with a suspension for Cesar than it did for Charlotte because he’s fighting the process. Charlotte was clearly cooperating and accepted accountability immediately by practically asking for her suspension.
And Cesar is a pro at this. He has been fighting suspensions for years.Decades by now.
Didn’t he also have some criminal investigations going on as well? Maybe that is also hindering the process.
A similar lack of update is also happening with an eventer too, also with video evidence. Transparency into the process would be so helpful in not feeling totally disillusioned by the FEI at this point. If these individuals are fighting the sanctions, requesting hearings, etc. those are perfectly reasonable explanations for a delay in their cases compared with Charlotte, who accepted responsibility and is fully cooperating.
But not knowing where literally anything is in the process here is a very poor image for teh FEI and equestrian sports in general.
Please don’t do that.
As much as those of us in the dressage world are very familiar and disgusted with CP, let’s not dumb it down to “he’s a man so that is why he has not been banned”. He’s not the name that Charlotte is in international sport, to the point of being the most decorated female GB Olympic athlete. I expect her name is much more known than CP, so the FEI is looking to set an example that they take any animal abuse very seriously.
It’s also likely much more complicated.
Maybe CD did not fight the suspension - she wants to do her penance - if they credit the interim suspension against the year, she’s almost halfway through it and by the time she’s ready to get back into teaching and competition after this baby, the suspension will be nearly done.
Likely CP continues to fight tooth and nail against any suspension or actions.
Thank you for saying this! Being a man has nothing to do with this. Look at how other countries operate…good bad or indifferent our process in the states is always a lot slower because of litigation.
As long as Parra does not show up to a competition I am fine with them getting this thing right because he should be prosecuted for his misdeeds concerning people and animals.
I guess the /s only showed up on my screen.
It really is not ever one or the other. It is almost certainly not the only reason for the discrepancy, but I also really don’t think you can say it has nothing to do with it. The FEI officials almost certainly have all kinds of implicit biases about how men behave, or how they should be treated- everyone does. And, no doubt, the striking difference in the way Charlotte responded as compared to Cesar or Andrew McConnon (which I agree is likely the root of the difference in official treatment) has a societally conditioned gendered component. Women are conditioned to be small and apologetic and non-confrontational… men are allowed much more anger and ego and confrontational behavior.
To be clear, I think her response was absolutely the right one, and I certainly hope she means what she says. But I do think there are some invisible ways, however small, in which gender is absolutely playing a part here.
Thank you. One thing people seem to gloss over or try to deny is that there can be more than one reason for any discrepancy or difference in treatment. Unfortunately, gender absolutely does have an impact and influence - it isn’t just “the FEI acted quickly because Charlotte is a woman” but rather more nuanced than that. And if you’ve lived in a world where this kind of double standard and discrimination is normal and accepted (not even just for gender, it can be due to all kinds of diversity), it can be hard to pick out the underlying, intertwined causes.
Transparency really helps here. The FEI has ready failed to communicate and provide the sort of transparency that people demand these days - we aren’t talking court documents, but just… literally ANY visibility on process or investigation would help cut down on the speculation and outrage. Having Parra and McConnon ongoing without much visibility while CDJ is front and center does not send a good message to a lot of folks.
But was hers though? Yes? She got a lot of media attention when the story broke, because of the very public profile nature and timing of the release…which was what the reporter was going for.
But if the demand is for the FEI’s investigations to be more transparent, was hers any more open to the public and transparent than anyone else’s?
Trying to compare Charlotte’s response to anyone else is pointless. There is another thread about two women being suspended. Different organizations, but if we want to try to pin gender issues on the response to these investigations then we should take a look at those as well. Are those two women also being as open and apologetic as Charlotte; or are they acting more like McConnon and Parra?
I’m not convinced these types of things should be public. It tends towards the start of witch hunts.
Ooh nice find…looks as though it would be lovely…after an exorcism/sage burning to drive away the evil spirits.
$4m and no turnout. Pass.
Yes!
As a female in a STEM field (currently an engineering manager) this nuance is something I live in the middle of. Perceptions are often different, and perceptions affect everything else.
My thoughts exactly.
While I agree that $4 mill with no turnout is insane - that is the norm for the most part in SE Florida - essentially no turnout. I had to send my horse to Ocala to get turnout when he needed extended time off after an injury.
Stables for 30 horses on 5 acres is insane.
I’m happy to see Parra’s property for sale. Hopefully the new owner will remove the awful artwork as well.
Earlier this year, CP was being investigated by the FBI for human trafficking. This would not be the first case where equestrian governing bodies wait for criminal verdicts before proceeding.
I admire Charlotte for being able to admit she was at fault and fully acknowledged the problematic behavior, no excuses. I think this is the difference in someone who exercised poor judgment in the moment and serial abusers such as CP and AM who adamantly refuse to accept responsibility despite video evidence of abuse. It isn’t even debatable if either of these two men are abusive, yet not a single acknowledgment in sight. Spineless and pathetic IMHO.
