My dog woke me up barking in the middle of the night last night. At first I thought I heard a cat possibly starting a fight, but as I listened for several minutes, it sounded different. This was a very scratchy, high vocal intermittent sound - like a call - not an animal in distress or anything. I’ve never heard anything like it. After about 10 minutes, whatever it was must have moved on - Any thoughts as to what animal it could have been - just curious?
Fisher cat? They make some godawful weird noises.
Just googled it and heard an audio clip - it does sound alot like what I heard and at the same interval. Didn’t think we had these in VA, tho.
Skunk? I heard one screaming in the middle of the night and woke up to find it screaming and chasing one of the horses around her paddock.
And yes it was shot and tested positive for rabies!
Could it have been a cat in heat? That is a LOUD and unpleasant cat sound for sure.
WHOA!
Now that’s pretty frightening!
Pretty sure it wasn’t a cat - googled a red fox cry and it sounds a lot like that, too - Is it their mating season?
Coons can make a screeching cat-like noise too, especially when they are fighting or mating. Barn owls also make a screeching noise when they are out and about.
the fox around here call to each other and it sounds like a loud cat yell and dog yip sort of blended together. actually i just saw the fox as i was out walking the dog, the dog went after a chipmunk to my right and when i looked up the trail, the fox was trotting along, heading in my direction. he went left and the dog stayed on the chipmunk trail.
you could look at my fox noise thread and see if that’s close
coyote? they have a call that sounds like a young girl shrieking/screaming. Its pretty scary!
