Curious to know what everyone’s go to liniments are for their horses. What is your favorite for a tough workout day, after show care, or for going back to work soreness?
Vetrolin is one of my favorites, and Sore No More for the legs.
I use the sore no more and vetrolin on the horse.
I stick Epsom salts and absorbine or bigeliol in the bath for myself. Haha
Supershorty uses exactly what I like! Vetrolin splashed into a bucket for a body wash, and an arnica thing I make myself out of dried arnica flowers and other stuff, which is essentially Sore No More. I put that on legs and neck and back.
I board and ride with a bunch of eventers and they are really good at cooling legs after XC, usually just with ice boots for 15-20 minutes. My jumper doesn’t get nearly the pounding that those guys get, but I do have some ice pocket wraps for the rare occasion when I think the footing at a show is really hard/sting-y.
Bigeloil liniment GEL. Not the liquid, the gel.
I love Sore No More gel, and my pony’s half closed eyes tell me he loves it too.
For body braces, I like the Vetrolin or the Absorbine (Refreshmint or Original) liquids. For legs, I like the Sore No More. I usually hose off with liquid liniment as soon as I untack, add ice boots and then do gel liniment after the ice boots. I use the Sore No More on myself as well.
I like the making a Vetrolin Bath for sponging the whole body after a work out.
For specific areas, I use a few different things depending on the soreness or intensity I want.
Everyday brace, I like Green Cool
A step up from that is the Blue Lotion (that’s what it is actually called)
Then what I use after a weekend of showing/hard schooling. Black Magic
I used to get an after workout rinse that was oatmeal based. Smelled sooo good, I think Epona made it? Anyone seen that around online anywhere? Haven seen it in years.
I agree with supershorty, Vetrolin and Sore No More. There was also a Chinese herbal liniment that Lucassb recommended to me which was great but I can’t remember the name of it.
Vetrolin
While I admit to a substance abuse problem with Vetrolin (I love the smell and would seriously dab a little behind each ear and go out on a Saturday night) I really think it does nothing physical for the horse. Yet I continue to use it. I mix up a big bucket and sponge it all over my horse (inhaling deeply) and afterwards my own bare hands feel…nothing. No tingling, no warmth, no cooling, no nothing. If that is my experience, how can it really do anything for the horse, with a coat of hair and a lot thicker skin between the Vetrolin and its innards?

Interesting. I’ve used Vetrolin before in the shower and did feel warmth and tingling, particularly when I used it on my head. Wonder if there’s a sliding scale of effects depending on how sensitive your skin is.
I really like vetrolin for a brace or light liniment; under wraps, I like green jelly (cool pack or absorbine or vetrolin jel - doesn’t seem to matter). I’ve only heard good things about sore no more, though!
