TB and a Standardbred. The former is less spooky than the latter …

Rocky Mountain Horse, coming 8. Bought when she was 1.5 years old.
Before her, arabs.
I was in Tucson this fall for work and had the opportunity to do a sunset desert/mountain trail ride, and to my delight all the horses at the stable were Rocky Mountain Saddle Horses - I had never seen/ridden one before.
It was an amazing ride and I adored Sam, the horse I rode. He was so solidly built, smooth, and surefooted. It was one of my favorite rides of all time and the national park we rode in was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen - especially at sunset!
I’ve always said that some day when I am done with hunters I will get a chunky little QH and just trail ride. Now I totally want a RMSH instead - I am seriously in love!
Moo is a PMU mutt – Paint, maybe a little draft, little TB? He’s quite sensitive but thick, only 15.2 We mostly event, but now that we’re mobile, doing more trails and hoping to do some endurance and camping.

Thanks so much for all the responses. As for me, I have an OTTB. She’s been wonderful and handily jumps any obstacle in the trail (after mom makes sure it’s safe).
Arabs that also do endurance.
I have three Missouri Fox Trotters.
This little guy hasn’t done much at all, but LOVES to be out and on the trail. Wish he was a little taller. He doesn’t gait. He does hate puddles and small streams but wades right into big rivers, go figure. His back kind of looks long in this pic but he is really short and compact.

This is my heart horse, Cricket.

And my psycho mare Kit.

Another PMU mutt owner here: Standardbred/Clydesdale Cross
Rock crushin’ hooves, big-time trot and pretty brave. We’ve had some moments at big spookables, but Penny will think through them and listen to me.
WOW I am the only one responding with a Haflinger??
going on 10 yr old gelding, steady ridden and driven trail. No competition, only cuz I don’t have time to train, but he is certainly willing and able to go!
I luv your PMU mutts!

He’s beautiful!
Ditto the Shagyas. I ride my dressage horse on trails and my mare is strictly a pleasure horse who also drives. She is fantastic, comfy gaits, brains, endurance and she’s pretty too
Gaited Mule.
My quarter pony was the best…miss taking him out on rides.
We used to always have a couple of mules for trail riding but as my grandparents have aged, we’ve downsized. We started getting Spotted Saddle Horses from TN back in the mid-90s and currently have two left for when they want to ride.
![](ustang!
He is pretty steady and sometimes gets spooked. I usually can get him to think through it and move on.

Oh I need a pic of the gaited mule!!!
10 year old Morgan gelding and my 25 year old Appendix/QH (she’s pretty much retired but she rocks as a trail horse). Dh’s horse is a halter bred QH so really not much use out on the trail.
My Diva is a Paint and we think TWH. She was starved though, so ended up the size of a large pony. She trots, but canters like a TWH. She like to go forward, but since I do too, we are a perfect match. She will trot by weed eaters, bridges, 4-Wheelers, prop planes - we have a landing strip in our neighborhood - but will totally freak out over a log. I think though, with enough desensitizing, and a calm rider, any horse and any breed can be a trail horse. When I galloped racehorses, we trail rode everything, every Thurs. Even the ones racing on Sat.
13 yr. old appaloosa mare.
I have an Anglo-Trakehner mare who will be 19 this spring. She’s also my dressage horse, but I think we’d both go nutso if we didn’t get out on the trail frequently.
Kentucky Mtn Saddle Horse. He also trots and every gait he has is smoooooooth! Got him at 8 and it’s been 5 years now; I feel so lucky to have him.
2 American Saddlebred mares, a Saddlebred/Friesian mare, and a cute little Morgan who was pulled from the kill pen at New Holland by Saddlebred Rescue just last March. I feel very fortunate to have such lovely horses who love to get out on the trails as much as I do.
