What can you tell me about Rat Terriers? (Update from today’s vet visit, jingles needed)

Here is hoping for good news.

The tumor takes up a large portion of her colon. As long as her lymph node biopsies come back ok, they think it is operable.

So now I worry if that big of a surgery and recovery is fair to her.

My daughter and Madame have an appointment with a specialist in August for a surgical consult. The shelter that she was adopted from made the referral and is going to pay for it. :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers:

Thank you all for the jingles! The surgical consult was moved up, due to a cancellation. I took Ma’am to the surgical consult for my daughter since she had pre-purchased tickets to go visit a friend. Long story short, the doctor was amazing, they all loved sweet Ma’am and her surgery is Thursday 8/18/22. Fortunately, the facility she was adopted from is footing the bill. The tumor is large enough and imaging it is quite difficult, they do think that it is possibly in her cecum (sp) as well as some lymph nodes. We really have no clear idea what they will find or what if anything can be done for her.

She continues to be just the sweetest little lady! She is always smiling, wagging her tail and she gives the sweetest, most gentle kisses. Her initial sadness has mostly faded and she seems to be very happy with her new mom and going to Nana’s during the day (my house). She and my Lhasa get along well, and we’ve had a few episodes of zoomies!

We’ve figured out what to feed her so that she will eat and she has gained a little weight. While at the vet consult, they started to do another ultrasound and shaved her tummy more than the previous ultrasound. The difference is that I can now see her tumor looking at her from above while she’s standing. Perhaps it is really that the tumor has also gained weight.

I haven’t had time to be nervous until now. I trust the surgeon and feel that Ma’am will be in the best of hands. The unknown is what I’ve been mentally trying to avoid. What I do know is that her life over the past month has been really good, she has had regular meals that she’ll eat, had a warm bed, toys, rawhides and lots of snuggles and most of all she has been and is loved dearly.

Please tell her that my dad recently had what sounds like the very same surgery, and he came through it just fine! :grinning:

The worst was discovered during her surgery, it was inoperable. The surgeon called my daughter and she made the heartbreaking, most loving and selfless decision to let her go peacefully.

For 4 weeks and 4 days, Ma’am was warm, safe, cared for and loved. She showed her appreciation in many ways, her near constant smiling face, her wagging tail but the best were her gentle kisses.

No where near long enough for us, but I’d like to think that those 4 weeks and 4 days were pretty damn good for her.

Run free sweet girl :broken_heart:

I am so very sorry for your loss @Barn_Mom (and your daughter).

It sounds like this very special dog passed knowing what truly loving home was.

I am so so sorry, I guess that she needed to be surrounded by wonderful people for her last days. Much as it hurts so terribly much, the difference for Ma’am cannot be overstated.

You were loved is the best memorial.

I’m so sorry to hear this, but love and happiness was all she knew at the end.

I’m so sorry. She was loved, though, in her last days - loved, safe, and happy. You and your daughter gave her every chance. She couldn’t have asked for better, in the past weeks.

I’m so sorry to hear this. Dogs live in the moment. She didn’t remember any of the bad times in her life once your DD adopted her. She only knew she was loved, and she left this earth knowing that.

You did great, Mom, raising such a loving daughter. My best wishes to you both in this difficult time. :kissing_heart:
