What Color Show Coat do You Own?

I’m in the market for a new show coat and would like a rich brown one with black accents to complement my bright bay mare.

Do you have any recommendations for brown coats or a custom coat designer which charges under $500?

What are your favorite coat colors with bright bay or chestnut horses?

Also, I’m not against basic black as long as the cut it nice and is well put together, so if you absolutely love a coat let me know. I’m dying to find something I really like which will last.

(I’m 5’7", 135 lbs.)

I have a bright copper chestnut, gold vs orange, and I love to wear a lighter navy color. I have found the Equine Couture Raleigh soft shell to be the best fit, it is also stretchy and lays nicely. I don’t spend $$$ on coats though, so I am not ultra-picky. I have brown, black and blue. Green is nice, but sold that one.

Just be careful if the brown is too dark- a lot of them look black to me from far away!

I think you can get away with any color, I’ve seen even some grey on a chestnut that looks nice!!!

I love brown coats but some brown fabrics end up looking really dull against a bright bay coat.

Hold it up to your horse in bright sunlight to see if it looks as good as it does in the store.

That said, the coat you describe sounds beautiful so I hope it works for you!

Ditto on a coat from Jo McCraken. I have a stunning burgundy vest and shadbelly that she made for me.

I have boring black, but I thought it went well with my bay’s black points.

My shad is a navy - dark and traditional.

My short coat is a beautiful blue… Deep blue but not navy - really rich - and has white piping. It’s really pretty.

If the baby on the way turns out to be chestnut I would like to go with a rich chocolate brown. I think it’s stunning on a chestnut.

Thank you for all the responses. Checking out Jo McCracken’s website now.

I am going back and forth between a rich brown with black accents or a black coat with brown points.

I think I’ll play around with some looks and see what happens!

I hope the OP won’t mind me intruding on her thread but I’ve recently switched over completely to dressage and have a show coming up. I’m not sure if I want to buy a new coat yet but I’m in the market for something that still definitely looks like a dressage coat, isn’t expensive, but isn’t black. I’m just not a big fan of black on me, I think it washes me out.

So if anyone would like to share some more links to cute coats in nontraditional colors, I wouldn’t mind!

Go ahead and “intrude” away. The more the merrier!

I love the navy and gray coats that are popping up everywhere.

When I was a junior, plum colored coats became somewhat popular; I remember thinking they looked quite nice, even though they weren’t for me.

I recently saw a dark green show coat on a gold chestnut. It was stunning.

My dream would be a dark green dressage coat (not the current hunter green but deep green) or dark grey with light accents!

I did some more digging around and I did find this one. It comes in brown and has four buttons but I’m not sure if it looks short.

You can sort by color, they have one in brown - it is a bit pricey though. I HAVE tried on that particular jacket (in blue) and it is a NICE jacket. I don’t own it - a bit more then my budget allows, but maybe dig around for a sale?

Impractical - there are several jackets here in various colors for under $200. I have their Piper jacket in purple (yep, purple) and for $70, you really can’t go wrong. They run a tad large, so size down if in question. I also have the Kerrits jacket in blue. Both are awesome, stretchy, lightweight. I went to an art supply store and bought some bling to add to the Kerrits coat - for another $10, I dressed it up

@MysticOakRanch Thank you so much! I love this coat in blue!

The purple shade is also lovely as well! I’m not a fan of all purples, but that purple tone is subtle and rich looking!

I don’t like a ton of bling but I like the idea of a little subtle added sparkle using art supplies! Going back to my 80s bedazzling roots…

Also, if you find a jacket that you like, a tailor can easily add trim or a contrasting collar to a jacket. I hand stitched piping onto my black Pikeur Diana a few years ago and had contrasting collar and trim added to an older shadbelly. It’s a very affordable way to make a plain jacket look custom.

The Horsewear softshell is 90-100 and comes in green, blue, berry/sort of a dark pink purple, etc. I didn’t care for the fit on me, but it’s a good place to start. You can use it for dressage, HJ, eventing, etc.

I think it’s very similiar to the Piper and Kerrits.

Yeah, the blue is really pretty too! I got some pearl style decorations - not shiny, but gave it a little more “character”. Can you believe the price??? I can’t believe they aren’t sold out:lol:

If you contact Linda Weber with Hawkewood in FL she does custom coats that are amazing. She is fairly reasonable as well. If you want her number PM me.

The ones below do custom work at least for saddle seat and hunt seat. Not sure about Dressage. Quality is outstanding.

It’s amazing to me that you can just buy a coat off the rack and wear it in a show. I’m used to everything being custom and you trade it in at the end of the season for a different one. Plus the cost difference is amazing.

I really like my Kerrits Competitor Koat. Very light weight, stretchy, wicks moisture, and is even slightly moisture resistant (a light rain will bead on the coat, a heavy rain will still soak you through). They also come in a variety of colors.

I own a navy jacket. For hunters I like the looks of a dark forest green or a dark navy just because of personal preference. Because that is all I own when I do dressage I wear my regular hunter jackets. If I were to do jumpers I think a royal purple would be very fun. I am not a fan of stark black on myself… but a really dark steely gray would be a lovely color in dressage as well (pretty much anything really dark other than black or deep jewel tones).

Third for Kerrits, I just bought one.

I have an old navy coat that is too small and a deep hunter green one that is too big, so I just bought the Kerrit’s Competitor in gray and I LOVE it.

Sorry, not available in brown though. Many of the colors do have nice white contrasting piping that maybe you could have a fabric person dye to the brown you want?

My colors are scarlet and gray for my bay mare, so I’m doing with mostly gray.
