There is a test for Sabino 1, but it’s really not worth testing for since being negatives doesn’t mean not Sabino, as there are other forms not yet testable.

There are tests for SW1, 2, and 3, so it WOULD be beneficial to researchers to test for that (and it’s all under a single test), as they are still working on getting a clearer picture of whether there are small enough differences in phenotype to start to tell the different forms apart. Of course, there are horses who are sooooo obviously Splash phenotype who are not testing for 1, 2, or 3, so there are (presumably) more than 3 forms. The test is pretty new, though a lot of horses have been tested so far.

As for color testing - you know the foal is black-based, so unless she’s a potential broodmare and you’d like to know if she’s homozygous black, you don’t need an Extension test.

The mare is also obviously black-based, and there is a wee bit of wiggle room for her to be brown, though I do think she’s black. If she’s not black, she’s brown - no room for bay. So, for her, the only beneficial color test would be Agouti. Since you don’t need to know the brown status, you can just do that through UC Davis or Animal Genetics (don’t remember if one is cheaper), as the results will come back in terms of A or a, and any A will really be At (brown)

So, filly “needs” Extension (if you want to know if she could ever produce chestnut) and Agouti (to know if she’s bay or brown). Because Pet DNA Services of Arizona is the only place that tests for brown, you need to test there. You’d need the comprehensive Agouti test there which is $60, in order to see the actual status. That would tell you any “a” form as well as any “At” form. they don’t look at “A”, so if you only do the brown test, any A would come back as “a”. Did that make sense?

This means you would have to go to 2 sources for testing.

eta - I think UC Davis is the only place for the Splash testing, so that rules out Animal Genetics

He is the full sibling to the filly, born in 2011 he is also Cardento x Goodtimes x Candyboy

I just bred the mare the other day to VDL Silverstone so in a few days we will know if she caught, super cool mare and so far her foals are so nice, if I do say so myself haha, wish I could keep them all!
