What do I do with this dog?

Wishing the OP and dog the very best outcome.

I couldn’t possibly agree with you more!

It’s that way here too, and I have a big problem with it. I think dogs should be available straight to the public for at least a few days. There are probably lots of families who would consider adopting a dog for $150 and not have to meet all the requirements of a rescue, than to adopt the same dog for $600 and have to jump through all the hoops.

It’s terrible. We don’t want someone to just let a dog loose but my local no kill shelter had security footage of someone throwing their dog over a 8 foot privacy fence onto the shelter’s property. Despicable? Yes. But on the other hand, at least the owner vaguely attempted to leave the dog in a place that would take care of it, so many people here just drive them away from home and let them out of the car.

Twice in the past few months people have left a box of kittens and puppies at local shelters. The kittens got left in torrential rain and were half drowned and hypothermic. The puppies got loose from their box and one was struck by a car. The cats were left at the private no kill shelter that was beyond full already. The dogs were left at the county shelter that was taking owner surrenders (so 0 excuse for the abandonment).Absolutely disgusting.

Yes in that scenario not right at all especially since the shelter was taking surrenders.

I wouldn’t take the chance in our situation. My primary responsibility is to our current pets. I’d put the word out to state rescues, and even neighboring states, that take pits, make the appointment for euthanasia, give them a deadline date, and proceed from there. If no one wants to take the dog, a peaceful end is better than risking my own animals. That new pet might be exciting, but my original dogs could probably enjoy that extra training time instead. You’ve got a plan and I hope it works out for your situation.

Sorry you are dealing with this OP.

We tried to make a rescue Dane work with our 3 existing dogs, but once he settled in, he began attacking our other dogs. He seriously hurt our resident Dane twice, and the second time was the last straw. The rescue wanted to be a good boy, but he could not regulate his feeling, and when another dog showed any insecurity, he attacked. The second attack required me to hit the rescue multiple times with a bicycle to get him to let go of our Dane.

I paid a ‘trainer’ after the first attack to try to make the situation work, but the 2nd attack happened weeks after I was regularly, supposedly getting good help. Dog trainers don’t need credentials either like horse trainers is seems… The dingaling trainer after the second attack still made it seem like we could get a peaceful household. No dude, I am not getting my dog killed for this rescue. His solution after the second attack was to put a shock collar on and correct the dog when he looked at our Dane funny. Just, go screw yourself dude. No one can be 100% on top of everything every freaking time, especially in a multiple person household. A mistake would have been catastrophic to our other dogs.

Our vet of many years was fully willing to put him down if the perfect home could not be found. All the rescues I contacted save one would not touch a dog aggressive dog with a 10 foot pole even though he was not remotely people aggressive. The one rescue did find a lady who had Dane experience and only kept one dog at a time. If the problem dog had been a pitbull (I love pitbulls BTW), we would have gone through with putting the dog down because there are just too many risks with other homes. People lie ALL THE FREAKING TIME! Fortunately for the rescue Dane, they are rare enough homes are more likely to be found for a dog with issues.

I am just sharing my story. I hope you find an acceptable solution that works for you, and euthanizing this dog to protect existing pets is OK if it comes to that. I will not mess with a dog aggressive dog ever again after this. It took seconds for this rescue dog to tear my dog’s neck requiring a drain on the first attack and to tear up his head on the second attack. The stress at home was palpable until this dog left. The humans and dogs could breath again after the rescue was out of the house.

ETA: He was intact when we got him, and we neutered him. Neutering did nothing to fix dog aggressive behavior.

To reiterate the problem out here in rural Alabama - yesterday I drove down a little road down to the highway. The road is a paved cow path about one and a half cars wide so you can’t drive very fast. I come around a curve and there is a half grown puppy dead in the road. And TEN more dogs milling around it. Then I look in the yard - EIGHT or more half grown puppies in the yard that I could see. So at least 20 dogs there of which at least half look like last summer’s puppies. So what happens when all these female dogs have puppies this spring??? The problem is out of control. Fix your damn dogs people. And cats too!

OP, any updates? Hope the dog is doing well.

Dog is doing well, healed from his surgeries without issue. He has learned how to behave very well around the horses, and to stay far away from the electric fences. Dog-wise, I can walk the two dogs together on leashes without issue, they are fine being near each other as long as there is a job to do/outside focus, but letting them loose together is still a no-go. In my non-professional opinion, MY dog is the one that instigates the conflict - he has never had this issue before, but the last time I brought a new dog into the household was also 11 years ago and it was a puppy.

We are on a rotating schedule so nobody spends long hours confined. It is far from perfect, but that’s where we’re at right now.

Decent update. Glad he’s doing well overall!

Can you try on neutral ground? Being on “his turf” could be contributing, maybe.

So, I have a lab that we got as a 5 year old. We had another dog when we brought him home. We had no issues. My other dog passed away and I got another one. The lab was fine meeting him at the shelter and fine in the truck. However, as soon as the new dog stepped through the door, he attacked him. I was so upset and considered returning the new dog. However, we did not leave them a lone and corrected him when he started to snarl. It took a good 6-8 months but they are friends now. It will happen, it just may take a minute.

Did you have to remove the eye or just the lesion?

My neighbor has a squatter on his property, it’s actually a friend of his who has had a bit of bad luck lately and needed a place to stay. Well this guy came with three dogs, one female and two males, none are fixed. the poor female is constantly pregnant and the dogs are all inbred psychos. My other neighbor took two puppies a couple of years ago and they are not nice dogs at all. They are very territorial and have gone so far as to attempt attacking my elderly dog before the owner called them off. The squatter needs to take his brood of inbred idiot dogs and get out of the neighborhood. No one wants him here and he’s bringing down property values with his broken down RV parked on the neighbors property. Sorry, went off on a rant and tangent.

Tried to attack your dog on your own property?
Frankly I don’t care if my dogs are territorial.
I can’t stand wandering dogs, elderly or not, but I live in a leash law area.

Yes on my property. I was supervising my dog so he didn’t wander and these dogs come out and tried to go after him. They’ve growled at me when not on their property when I was talking to someone driving by, the young lady down the street was afraid to go by the house when she was out walking because they threatened her, they are constantly wandering off and going onto other people’s property to do their business, etc.

That sounds frustrating. I love dogs but I am definitely not a fan of dogs wandering around without an owner. I wonder if the owner could be talked into having them altered, and if a low cost clinic would make it possible? It’s definitely hard when people are totally irresponsible.
