What do we do with friends? What are friends for?

Do friends have different access to our postings or an ability to follow us in some different way. If not, what is the purpose of friending someone or accepting a friend request? Just bragging rights or to show whose faction you align with? I don’t get it…

I was literally just coming here to start a thread about this topic!

Right now there are a bunch of default features enabled for user profiles, and we’ve been looking into these settings more to determine what to keep.

Can anyone who had a friend list on the old site tell me if those friends are reflected in the “friends” tab found under your current user profile?

Mod 1 doesn’t have any friends, so I’m trying to get a handle on how it works too. :o

I’m guessing that you would be able to see recent activity by friends when you access your profile, in the area where your own recent posts appear…

We’ll all figure out this brave new world together!
Thanks ~

vxf111, I just checked your profile and you have two friends under that tab, and as I suspected their recent posts appear there on your profile’s activity stream.

Did you have those friends on the old site or were they added here?

I can understand how folks would want to maintain their main friend lists, etc. privately, so we’re trying to figure out how best to adjust the settings.

Thanks ~

I just friended those two members (though, in my defense we know each other IRL). I cannot figure out what the benefit of that action is on the site. Just that I can see their recent posts? Won’t that get unwieldy if I friend lots of people?

I don’t see my friends in my profile?!?!

My birthday’s also wrong and I have no idea why or how to change that?! I was born on 7.11.79 but it looks like it got morphed into 11.7.79?!

I think it’s so that you can follow their recent activity easily via your profile’s activity stream…kind of like a news feed on Facebook.

We’re temporarily disabling pretty much all of these profile features, such as visitor tracking and profile messages, and we’ll ask for folks’ input after we get through the main “glitchy stage” of the upgrade.

We don’t have the goal of making this site into Facebook, so we’re not seeing a real need to implement some of these options at this point.

Other folks, feel free to add your input here.
Sorry for any confusion!

Just gotta say that I loved this thread’s title. I thought it was going to be some super-philosophical discussion about friendship.

Very meta

This post enticed me to try the thumbs up option for the first time!

And vxf111, at least the birthday mix-up didn’t make you 20 years older or something.

Birthday is fixed. Not sure if that was an issue with this upgrade or a previous one – I know the one in (I think) 2006 resulted in lots of birthdays being swapped that way. Just checked mine and it’s correct, but we’ll keep an eye out to see if there are other instances of it. Thanks!

Please, we do NOT need this to be like Facebook, heaven forbid! It was lovely just the way it was. Please tell whoever it was that decided it needed changing that the adage ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ applied to this forum. It wasnot broken, and did not need ‘fixing’ and now it IS broken. I do not like this new version at all.

Someone emailed me to say they were sorry they missed my birthday. It was weird

It actually was broken, but you may not have realized it!

We were several software versions behind on the platform used to run the site, which was causing growing compatibility issues with some newer versions of Internet browsers; our ability to fight the ridiculous number of spammers attempting to hit us on a daily basis was also severely limited; we didn’t have the ability to otherwise integrate the forums and its registration system with the rest of our site, which caused daily issues for lots of new users; among various other techie issues that I don’t have the need to understand and leave to the experts.

So, yes, we very much appreciate that it’s a hassle to have to undergo the awkward phase of a new platform on the site, but we assure you that we’ve already gone to great lengths to make the site feel like the old one and will continue to do so. There were some fixes we implemented from the default settings on our beta site (such as getting rid of the awful red font color) that didn’t carry over to the new site, so we’re working to implement them again and address the new issues that have become apparent now that the site is operational under real use on a variety of platforms and browsers.

We appreciate your patience while we work on sorting through the glitches ~
