What do you feed your foal?

I’m sure there are tons of threads about feeding your foals but just wondering if any of you guys could simply post what you have found to work best with your foals so far… Including supplements  That way I can see if I am on track. I have been in contact with some representatives but I wanted to just see what people have found works best! Thanks!

I feed my weanlings 3# of Gro 'n Win per day. They are on pasture 24/7.

Progressive Grass Balancer. Mine is in good weight, light ribs, so he’s only getting 2.5lb instead of 3.5, but I’m adding a vit/min supplement to help make up for that.

If he needed way more calories, I would be using TC Growth - that has to be one of the lowest sugar growth feed out there.

Oh and yes, pasture 23 hours a day, with access to hay in his stall.

I feed All Phase to all my horses in appropriate amounts. It’s Pennfield’s ration balancer. My barn feeds cooked oats once per day so she gets some of that too just for the heck of it.

4 lb./day TC Senior (very similar to TC Growth), with a half dose of a vit/min supp since that is a little less than rec and Senior has a little less lysine than Growth. Love the low sugar.

My foal is a WB and his parents are notorious for being easy keepers… He will be out on pasture for 23 hours and then brought in to eat and be handled and played with of course! we have awesome grass so we arent really worried about that but hes a big boy and hes going to need to eat. i think what we are doing is starting out with the suggested amount of TC growth but then supplement it with TC 30 percent as well for the extra minerals and vitamins?.. Does that sound about right?

If the horse (of any age) does not need the extra calories of grain, then just feed a vitamin/mineral supplement. I use Horse Guard because it was developed for the selenium deficient soils of the Pacific NW.
My weanlings are on pasture, and get Timothy hay with a little alfalfa. One foal and one yearling don’t need any more calories than that to maintain their weight, while one weanling is being switched to TC Growth (from SafeChoice, after reading all the previous threads on nutrition- thanks COTHers!). I have never needed to feed the full recommended amount of grain, so I always balance it with the HorseGuard.

I exclusively feed Seminole Wellness Grow Right to foals from creep feed up through at least their 2 yr old year. I absolutely love this product. It’s low in starch but high in fiber. My current long yearling is an easy keeper and has never required the recommeneded amounts, so he also gets a half-dose of an all-around supplement to make sure he’s getting all the needed vitamins and minerals. He’s turned out 24/7 with free access to a run-in stall. All my horses have unrestricted access to both plain and mineral salt blocks and an EquiMin block.

Breeda which is essentially a steam extruded barley product with vits and mins, lucerne (alfalfa?) chaff, sunflower seeds, oats, breed + supplement and equine chia seeds. With lovely lush spring pasture! And he and his mother look terrific

My foal gets 1/2 pound of safe choice & 1/2 pound of Gro & Win twice a day. + hay inside/outside

Piaffe - any particular reason you aren’t just feeding the recommended amounts of the GNW? The 1/2lb SC isn’t doing much of anything nutrition-wise, and the 1/2lb of the GNW is probably at best 1/2 what he should be getting, depending on his age/size/weight and mature size.

TC 30% supplement with O&A hay. Out on bahia pasture unless bad weather dictates stall time.

brains…like zombies, in the hopes they get some.

I feed my weanlings Purina Equine Junior with Fastrack probiotics. Unlike warmblood breeders, I do NOT NOT NOT want to see ribs on my weanlings!

For the first few months after weaning they get free choice grass hay, a little alfalfa at breakfast, Eq Jr at dinner, and grass hay in their feeders all the time.

I’ve tried other things, but I always come back to this. They always look wonderful, year in and year out, so I’ve stuck with what works for me.

I feed mine the suggested amount of Buckeye Gro N Win for their age and size. Works wonderfully and in the 8 years since starting with Buckeye I’ve had clean xrays on all the babies I’ve sold.

out on pasture 24/7 weather permitting (they come in to stalls in severe weather) with 1/2 quart TC feed am and pm and orchard grass/alfalfa mix hay. All horses here get Source as a supplement.

Pasture 24/7, grass hay, Horse Guard vitamins. No grain.
