What do you like reading about in blogs? Edit: she's gone :'''(

So sorry. But you have much to celebrate after your years of partnership. Many great memories. I had to send my own grand old mare along, she made it clear she was ready. We had the gift of planning ahead and picked a wonderful fall day for her last with us, out in the warm sun ankle deep in new clover. There was also a bottle of molasses involved. It was still tough to bid her farewell.

I’ll drink a toast to both of them tonite and think about how much I enjoyed your posts about your journey with her.

Also hugs to your mom who lost two in a short span. It is always hard on the caretakers who are so familiar with daily needs and behaviors. Please notify the COTH network if your remaining pony needs a friend at home. I am sure someone would be willing to help.

So very sorry, I enjoyed reading your journey, she was a special mare.

Ah, crap. Now I am sitting in an airport lounge with tears in my eyes. I, too, lost the horse of a lifetime at 20 in recovery from surgery. Those of us lucky enough to have such a partner know how it feels to be the one left behind. I am so sorry.

Nikki was a great mare with spirit and heart. She was lucky to have found a supportive rider like you, supershorty, who loved and appreciated her. Godspeed, Nikki.

I’m so sorry for your loss. You made such a wonderful team and I too loved following your story

So sorry for your loss. There just aren’t words…

So, so sorry for your loss.

so very sorry for your loss. I really enjoyed reading of your adventures with your very special girl.

Oh Supershorty, I’m so sorry. You were such a lovely pair.
Hang in there. Hugs and love, from Colorado.

Thanks, everyone. I’m reeling. I feel like there’s such a big hole right now, and it’s slowly getting to where I can look at her old stuff and not dissolve into tears, but can’t handle certain things yet. I can look at pictures and videos of her and smile, but for some reason, putting up some of her ribbons was something I wasn’t ready for.

It was just so unexpected and so fast, and not the passing she deserved. I wanted her - all of mine, really - to go out like Duckie did, having just been groomed and fussed over, and with a belly full of treats. Not scared and in pain and without me or my mom there with her

This has always been one of my favorite videos of her, even though we have a late rail, because she’s having such a blast jumping around one of the biggest tracks we jumped, and she’s trying so hard that she literally jumps me off over the 3rd fence. She was so special.

You were lucky to have had the opportunity to be associated with such a brilliant horse. A horse who gives you the opportunity to jump some big courses, so brave, so talented and so honest, and is such a rare jewel among horses, equine royalty. They have a special hum coming from inside them, they are not regular horses. They can teach you so much. It is a time to cherish in your life, to have such a horse. The pain of losing such a special horse may dull a bit in time, but it never goes away. Trust me on that observation.

{{{HUGS}}} The Really Great Ones suckerpunch us when they go.
Oh, heck, they all tear a piece of our hearts.
Planned or through crisis, it is always a unique loss.
Every name in my sig line was a different kind of pain & yet the same.

Nikki & Duckie were fortunate to have you & your Mom.
And we of COTH were fortunate to have shared them through your posts.

Wishing you Peace

This is such sad news. I loved reading your blog; Nikki reminded me so much, personality-wise, of my tb mare of the same vintage whom I retired the same year, so I always felt a connection even if we were jumping 2 feet lower than you! I hope you find a way to keep writing, you have a great voice.

Oh no. No, no, no! This news brings tears to my eyes–I can only imagine what you’re feeling. Sending you my deepest sympathy over your devastating loss.

You and Nikki made me smile and laugh and have hope that the show world could still be fun for an ammie jumper on a feisty OTTB. You were lucky to have each other!

She may be gone, but her legacy will live on. I, for one, will never forget your story!

I am so sorry for your loss

A beautiful story, and a beautiful mare.
Like so many others who followed you two, I am terribly sad to hear this news, and so sorry for your loss.
Best wishes to you, and to her as well. I am sure she has everything a red-headed mare could desire now.
Lots of snacks, and big sticks to jump, and a rider who loves to see those pinned ears whenever she brings them out.

Thank you. There is one more blog post coming at some point. Not sure when.

She was too big a personality and too special a mare to keep all to myself <3

I love this sentiment, and I’m sure she’s happily munching away on all the food she can eat. But I choose to believe that she’s waiting for Emily to jump more jumps

I wasn’t going to revisit this thread cause I cry every time I read about Nikki. But I loved the video! You guys were such a team - she tried her hardest and you rode the pants off her. Keep writing - you have talent.
