I’ve got just shy of 10,000lbs towing capacity - I’ve hauled my 2H 1994 Kingston BP (about 3,000lbs empty) with two horses (one 16h QH, probably 1,000 lbs and the other a 15.2 Morgan around 850 lbs), tack and supplies in the bed of the truck with no problems.
2003 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD pulling a Trail-Et BP 2-horse with dressing room. I wouldn’t want to tow with anything smaller. Too many hills and wind here.
1998 Merhow w dressing room (2900# empty), 2 TBs (probably about 2300# in total), plus hay, tack, etc. with a 2015 Tundra V8, with tow package, 10,500 capacity. Probably only get to about 6k fully loaded, truck does great stopping and going. Usually haul a single horse, and don’t approach 5.
Which direction, diesel is better? I’m going to guess yes but checking .
I have a similar set up. 2001 Chevy 2500HD (gas, 8.1 liter) with a Trail-Et New Yorker, 2H side-by-side with ramp and dressing room. My truck has zero issues, and I’ve hauled a true 18hh WB and an American Cream Draft at the same time before. Usually don’t haul that heavy but it was a solid for a friend moving barns, and then helped the same friend move two American Creams to a different barn a couple years later… But I think the WB weighed more than either of the drafts.
But my truck gets horrid fuel economy. All Interstate with no traffic netted me 13 mpg, whereas city is 8-9. Yeah.
2H Hawk with dressing room, 2015 Chevy 3500 long bed, crew cab diesel. Hauls like a dream. Way more truck than I need but it handles mountain passes, heavy wind, steep hills of our area with ease.
Equispirit bp w dressing room, xl. Often with two big horses (draft crosses). Old truck was a 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 crew cab, big gas engine, optimized for towing (tow packages right rear axle ratio, etc).Rated to tow almost 9k, probably hit 6500 plus fully loaded. Towed well with a wd hitch.
New truck, 2017 Ford 150, 10 speed ecoboost, also optimized for towing (longest wheelbase, max tow package, etc). Rated to tow 12k. Really like this setup. Definitely more available power and much better gas mileage.
We don’t pull much any more, but pull a 14’ bp three horse slant stock type trailer with a 1990 F150 4x4 and 2016 F150 4x4 with full towing package.
Everyone has pulled up to 16’ bp and gn stock trailers here safely with half tons for decades.
Much of how hauling is safe is to have well maintained rigs and drive carefully.
Around here, smaller stock/horse trailer wrecks are very rare and those are all over the roads.
Most cowboys in season keep those hooked up and drag them all over all day long.
I have an older Trailet 2h bp w/ dr and pull it with my 2014 f150 xlt v8 4wd with a WD hitch. I don’t tow frequently, only my 1 horse, and locally (usually less than 1hr away). No problems so far, I got the truck last summer and have only hauled out about 8 times or so since then.
Used to have a 2000 f250 that was strictly a farm vehicle but it and my daily car were both old and in need of work so I traded in both for the f150 which now doubles as farm and daily commuter vehicle.
They import into Port Hueneme near LA and either deliver from there or you can do like I did and pick up there, or find a hauler to deliver for you. Not sure if there is a more northern port they ship to?
Anyway, if you do buy PM me for more details. I got several add ons and love my trailer!
08 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD, rated to 10,000#. I mostly tow a little steel Shoop 2H BP, no dressing room. About 2000# empty. I’ve never been anywhere close to the maximum load and wouldn’t want to be, but it has happily gone anywhere I have pointed. I had a trailer brake issue at one point and can vouch for the truck’s stopping power when “normally” loaded.
My mom uses their 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 to tow her aluminum 2h BP (no dressing room).
I use our 2012 Toyota Tundra (awful on gas) to tow the same trailer.
Before my parents sold their business they also had a Chevy Silverado 3500 for towing heavy equipment and plowing. It was beautiful to drive if you were putting it to use, but it was awful to drive on its own. Like there was too much power or something.
