When you check out a horse’s record on USEF what does DNP mean? Can it mean the horse bucked or refused jumps and was disqualified?
Did not place.
As ybiaw said, it’s that the horse did not place, but no indication of why. Could have been a competitive round that just wasn’t good enough to be in the ribbons, could have been the rider falling off. No way to tell.
If you look at a horse’s USEF report, you can see what classes it competed in and how many entries were in the class. As supershorty said, there is no real way to know if a horse bucked or refused, but if it says DNP and the class only had 5 entries, for example, you would know the horse was eliminated, but it could be any number of reasons such as the rider went off course, fell off, or had too many refusals. So yes, it CAN mean that but it is far from a given, especially if there are many more competitors than there are ribbons. Some very good rounds don’t place at certain horse shows that draw large crowds and high quality horses and riders.
If you are looking at a hunter or jumper, seeing DNP only means didn’t place- as other posters mentioned, you could have 60 entries in the class, not placing is not necessarily a bad reflection on the horse
Don’t jump to conclusions that it’s a bad thing. Sometimes if I’ve entered an entire division and the horse is tired or has been good in it’s other classes I may opt not to do a final class (such as a hack). If I can’t get to the secretary to do an offical scratch, the results show up as DNP.

I really wish, especially for jumpers, that when reported to USEF, they would post the placing. A DNP in a class of 60 could be 9th or 59th. Big difference if your looking at the horse. I am pretty sure they get the numbers (times) not just the placing.
I also have had DNP when I didn’t go in the class like an under saddle that was part of the hunter division but I didn’t wait around for it. They usually list the number of class entries which helps to keep things in context.
Thank you so much! All of you. You made your explations very clear and I understand now.
DNP could also be a blue red round. So always go back to the original show results to confirm. I also had a friend who requested the USEF remove all of the DNP in blue red rounds because it was a sale horse and it did not look good on its record.

It would be nice if for jumpers they would record like they do for eventing on the USEA website - a horse might not have placed but shows jumping faults both XC and show jumping. But is it really the USEF’s responsbility to maintain show records to help market a sale horse? You could have a flawless jumper but a rider who gives the horse a bad ride…

It’s one of my biggest beefs with USEF, the sheer laziness in recording HJ placings while Dressage points show test scores and XC shows faults. It doesn’t solely benefit sale horses, it benefits all horses that rely on the Almighty USEF to document where it has been and what it has been doing. A verifiable “official” history is a good thing for any horse to have, and they already have the system in place. It’s not like anyone else can step in and offer a national points recording service.
DNP is completely useless and can be absolutely misleading when it shows up in a class of 5 with no mention that the rider went off course or didn’t even show up that day.
“ELIM” would be extremely handy, as would number of faults in a jumper round. Half the horses in the jumper ring at WEF are DNP but still turned in fault-free rounds. It’s pretty annoying to spend $10K+ getting a horse to WEF yet have only pages of DNPs to show for it.
I also wish they would stop removing results from more than 6 years ago when they start a new season - this makes no sense as the info is already in their database, has been freely available on the web, and then suddenly goes poof. Drives.me.batty.

Elim would be great, or DNS, for did not show, all I am asking for is placing, not even scores, if there is 65 riiders and they pin 10, and you come in 11, that 11 looks the same as 65. It should be very simple and they have the capabilities because the get all the results. Idk, just seems like something simple. And its not just about sale horses.
