What does it cost to import from Holland?

I’m looking at importing a mare from Holland. Anyone know approx cost for transporting into Calgary, Alberta? What transport company did you use?

The last mare (over 2 yrs old) I imported was in Feb 2011. The total cost of importing from the previous owners farm to me was over $12k.

I have used HFR for the many of the horses I have imported, and I have used Dutta once. They are very professional and do a great job. They will give you a quote if you contact them.

Klatte is another shipper, but I havent used them. Good luck.

From Holland to NY and through the 3d quarantine it is about $7500 for a gelding. Depending on where the horse is in Holland you will have costs associated to get from the farm to the airport, and then from the quarantine station to your farm in NA. If it is a mare you will add $2500-3000 or so for CEM quarantine, and if a stallion, about $5000 additional. I do not know specifics about importing directly to Canada, but I am sure it is similar.

A friend of mine is bringing in two mares from Oldenburg, but the flight is actually from Amsterdam to NY (they will be vanned from Germany to Amsterdam). She said it will run her about $13,000 per mare, not including transport charges from quarantine in NY to her farm.

I assume you mean $13,000 per mare? I have imported a lot of horses, and it always averages about $8000 for the under 2s and geldings, 11K for the mares, and about 15K for the stallions. Of course it depends on the start and end points. I use Klatte and Dutta.

Gelding just came THIS WEEK. Amsterdam to LAX plus USDA quarantine. $9100.

Prices have gone up! Yikes!

Pregnant mare from Belgium to TX - 12K in 2011. I used Alex Nichols Agency and was really happy. Three colts before their 2nd birthday also in 2011 were about 7k each. Great care, communication, etc.

We imported a mare from Holland into Calgary about 6 years ago so I have no idea how much the prices have changed but it worked out to be about 10k CDN, we did the CEM quarantine at our own place.

Yes, as I said - $13,000 PER MARE. But I was wrong, that figure includes vanning from NY to her farm in NC. It also includes transport from Oldenburg to Schiphol (Amsterdam) - not sure how much that portion is, but I paid $785 4 years ago for transport of a gelding from Oldenburg to Schiphol.

Yes but the poster was asking because earlier post said this

You are right - I missed a zero. That’s what I get for posting in a hurry. I will fix it.

To come into LAX - you would be looking at the following

$9100 trucking within Holland, shipping to LAX, USDA quarantine. This is last week’s price!

Then $500 roughly trucking from LAX up to UCDavis for CEM quarantine

CEM quarantine - $1955

Then you would have trucking to Canada - I would guess $1000 - $1500 from UC Davis to Calgary.

That’s roughly $11,555 to get a mare to the Western USA and out of CEM quarantine. Not including trucking up to Canada.

Perhaps Toronto is cheaper?

I just shipped a gelding from JFK to England via Amsterdam through Mersant International Ltd www.mersant.com 718-978-8200. Subtracting out the transportation costs from Amsterdam to England I paid $5497. My horse was shipped with two other horses which lowered the price. There was no quarantine going to England, so you would have to add that cost in.

I have heard it is more expensive to ship from Europe to U.S. and more expensive for mares and stallions getting through customs.

Can’t say enough good stuff about working with Paul Weygand - (347) 632-3002 | paulw@mersant.com. Easy to deal with, always available to answer questions, very patient, and my vet especially appreciated his detailed instructions.

imported mare last week 9/18/12

schipohl (amersterdam) to LAX with CEM quarentine = $12,195 with International Horse Service (Peter Neiuwenberg)

a gelding (or colt/filly<731 days old)= $9,100

KLM sets air fare once a year, so no off season tickets for horses. The exchange rate can impact your import price slightly for misc fees, certificates, etc.

You might have a little less because we pay USDA 3 day quarentine at LAX about $2900. since you’re canadian your at airport quarentine, if any, isn’t controled by the USDA.

hope that helps and PM me if you need recommendations for vets in europe, etc.

I shipped with John Parker last October and it was roughly the same amount.

how exciting for you!

I believe KLM flies into the Calgary Airport no problem. Any airline that ships horses lands into Calgary since there are horses coming and going from there all the time.

Also, Dr. Dan French, DVM, of Teradan Farms provides import/quarantine services and his place is a certified facility. It is located just behind Spruce Meadows. You can contact him for more information.

Thank you all for your input. I appreciate it.

Rodawn, thanks also for the tip, re: Dr French. I didn’t realize he had a quarantine barn there.
