Tried the Majyk Equippe and they sagged quite a bit so that part I didn’t like. I’m trying the Harrison Howard’s from Amazon on a friends gelding so I will know more how those hold up. Both of my guys are sporting Shoo Flys and so far they seem to be holding up well. One is pastured 24/7 and the other is ridden so they are coming on/off regularly. Neither is great for wear and tear. I honestly don’t expect more than a season out of fly boots. They’re not a huge investment.
Well I haven’t had the fly sheet on her yet. I am not putting it on in the 100 degree plus days (looks like it will stay that way for eternity). I hate to say it because as soon as I do, the flies will come out in force but despite the temps, the flys are not bad (YET). So right now she is just sporting her traffic cone fly boots and her fly mask.
I’ve been using the Cashel fly boots. This year I bought a pair of the Smartpak ones that are similar.
Both the Cashel and Smartpak ones don’t come up as high as day the Shoo Fly ones but they don’t affect how my guy walks and I definitely don’t see him stomping like the others in his turnout. I use a long nose Lemieux for mask and a hard plasticity fly sheet (similar to the Kensington ones). Not matchy-matchy but I think he likes his fly gear
That’s a great look lol!
Also thoroughly pleased until yesterday. Ponies got caught out in a pop up storm and went bonkers (did not see it, only the aftermath of impressive skid marks and deep divots :o ) and one hind boot came off still done up and one front was partly down around a foot. I suspect the fleece got very heavy with the amount of water and mud and gravity and hooliganism combined to remove them. No damage other than needing to hose them off.
Mine do not have any fleece. Still hanging in there!
Oh, I wonder if I got slightly different to what you got? I got the balloon style with elastic top and bottom and they’ve got polarfleece type material as binding for the elastic. These:
Thinking ahead, if I get energetic, I could easily replace the fleece with a silky lining material that wouldn’t get as heavy when wet but would still provide skin protection. Hmm. Will have to think on that because it won’t be a small job.
That’s not fleece fleece; it’s synthetic fleece and should dry quickly.
Um, yeah, I know it’s not sheep’s fleece. And it’s not fake sheep’s fleece. It is the polyester spun fabric commonly called Polarfleece (which is a brand name) or just fleece.
And it did not dry quickly enough to prevent it stretching the elastic and slipping all the way off over one hoof and part way off another. Fleece, whether natural or polyester, once truly soaked gets very heavy. The really cheap, thin, non-stretch lamb’s wool knock offs slightly less so.
Good news is the mud from slipping off hosed off well and the got 24 hours to dry while my horse wore a different style. They went back on looking new and the elastic was not permanently stretched from that one weather assault.

I blew through 2 pairs of Shoo Flys on my 6 year old this year. The plastic stay up piece ripped through both pairs. Taking them on- off several times a week for riding doesn’t help. My older horse (14) has faired well all summer in the same pair. He’s pasture boarded and I haven’t taken them off all summer.
I bought Stomp Stompers for next year for the younger one and can probably stick with Shoo Flys , maybe even the same pair (?) for the older one.
The HH ones from Amazon were huge and seemed way too easy for my younger one to get off with the tabs sticking out. The other brand that I would be willing to try is Warrior.
This is hardly my biggest investment or issue in life but it’s been interesting to try a few different ones.
The Shoo Fly Leggins have held up, even when my youngster took one off from time to time, but I’ve stopped using them. My horse got fungus around his coronary band seemingly overnight. I think because he wasn’t always 100% dry under them. Whether it was from hosing, dew, or rain (usually tried to take them off then). Of course no other horses probably have this issue but since he’s not had this before and I could see the boots making a dark, wet, warm environment in that area, I think it could be related.
I’ve treated with a antifungal and it’s gotten better, but still waiting for a spot or two to heal, and I think it’s now led to him having cellulitis (seeing vet today).
These issues are probably so rare, and horses will find a way to get any ailment. Might be unrelated to the fly boots, but it started after wearing them for a few days. I would take them off when the bugs weren’t as bad. I know many use these boots without a care and will never have an issue though!
My mare’s Stomp Stoppers have survived 2 summers without much damage. The netting has worn a little at the fetlock area and the few times she’s been able to pull one off over her hoof. I think they have one more season in them.
Last year, she got some rubs and fungus spots around her coroner’s, but this year she hasn’t. But last summer had epic rainfall.
