What funny things does your horse eat?

I’m sure we’ve all had that horse that ate whatever wasn’t nailed down…

Besides the usual carrots, apples, peppermints and horse treats, my old mare ate Skittles, Fig Newtons, grapes, bread, Fruit Roll-ups, Pop Tarts, Fruit Loops, tangerines, watermelon (but not the rind), bananas… the list goes on. She had a particular liking for Harvest Cheddar Sun Chips and Propel. She even ate bute tablets out of your hand (albeit with making a face). The only thing she wouldn’t eat was alfalfa pellets.

I haven’t experimented much with my current mare and people food, but she absolutely adores doughnuts (plain and raised glazed). The only thing she isn’t fond of is peppermints. Her nickname is “Pork Chop” because she’s round and such a little chow hound for all of the usual horse-y foods too.

I had a horse that would eat chicken fingers. We found out only because he stole our lunch one day.

Had another horse that loved ice chips.

Mine are warmbloods. Apparently in europe they eat anything but meat. And drink anything. One guy loved my mare and gave her starbucks coffee. Mine like beer, coca cola, orange juice, etc. They eat like goats and drink like Savannahians.

Callie, my old TB mare from Kentucky, only liked carrots. She had a much more sensitive palate.

Dairy Queen plain vanilla cones.

If we pulled in that parking lot, he would do a little happy dance in the trailer and expected to get his own cone.
He licked the ice cream, then chomped on the cone.

That started when we were not paying attention and he reached over and started licking the other side of the cone we were licking.

He was a character anyway and ate most anything we were eating, but those were his favorite treat, we think.

Potato chips, my gelding will go nuts for them as soon as he hears the bag crinkle. And sandwiches/bread and protein bars. Basically anything you might try to eat around him.

My horse once ate a Pez container. Both the plastic and the candy. I was a kid and we were outside the little store we would ride to when we had candy money. Chubby grabbed it and it was gone. It was uneventful and I guess it went through him. No big head on the container as this was 1960-ish and we bought them for the cool dispenser.

TG my Herd of 3 are all total Hos for Dollar Tree gingersnaps.
Saves my pocketbook from having to shell out more for traditional horse treats

DHs TWH once ate a bite of pork chop - he was begging & Tom offered, thinking he’d refuse… Nope, chomped it right up

@Texarkana WTH are Beaver Nuggets?

I have one that will eat about anything – pizza, ham sandwich, breakfast burrito (when he was showing, I think the grooms thought it was funny to see what he would try; he never turned down anything). His favorite treat here at home is a banana, peel and all. The only thing he would NOT eat? When I tried to put him on Platinum Performance, he would not touch it:rolleyes:.

I just discovered the other day my horse loves bbq pizza with vegan cheese.

The camp kids used to play a game at lunchtime: What Won’t Tip Eat? He’d sampled hamburger, chicken fingers, pizza, and many deli sandwiches before I found out and put an end to it.

He won’t eat marshmallow of any kind, pumpkin bread, or cinnamon red hots.

He will eat a bird’s nest, complete with eggs inside, and have to have his mouth hosed out after he gets a piece of shell stuck in his tongue.

Current mare is very food oriented but picky about texture. She hates anything that sticks to the roof of her mouth, like bananas or muffins.

She did develop a taste for frozen vlemonade one summer but only until the weather cooled off.

As a kid I used to ride to the corner store and get a popsicle and a bottle of apple juice to share with my horse. Put the bottle in the corner of her mouth and she’d glug it down.

I don’t feed my horse unusual food.

But, he sadly will not eat Fuji apples (my favorites) but likes Gala and MacIntosh apples very much. For a long time I thought he didn’t like apples but he just doesn’t like the apples that I like. When Galas went on sale, I learned that he actually really likes apples. I never knew a horse who was picky about varietals!

@J-Lu - Mine has a preference for the Macintosh varieties (Macs, Spartans). I like Spartans so we often share an apple.

The other one is a Labrador Retriever in a horse suit. He also has an easily upset digestive system so I don’t give him odd things. Except for marshmallows, because they are cheaper than Peeps. He stole my friend’s Peep right out of her hand one day!

A few years ago he ate something that really upset his system. It took weeks and several vet calls for him to recover. Never did find out what it was, but we suspected a mushroom, fungus, or mold as it was a very wet summer. Thus it is conventional treats for him.

I had a horse once that loved candy, especially Airheads. My sister gave him a hot tamale once and he was begging for more lol.

Rusty, my current partner, is more finicky. He did like the potato chips I had, and he nibbles on Cheetos. He likes granola bars. Really, he’s willing to try quite a few things. But not bananas. He hates those. And he didn’t really care for sour Skittles lol.

My old man, Knight, is super picky and turns his nose up at anything irregular.

My mare LOVES cool ranch Doritos and strawberries. I haven’t really tried much with her. However her foal loves beer, he will chug that stuff and beg for more. Whenever my mom brings one out she has to hide it. My sister’s mini pony loves Dr. Pepper, she knows how to grip the cup just right too. Our TB won’t eat much though, except bananas he loves those.

Honey crisp apples are the best for my horses.
