What is oldest age a TB can make its first start at?

I thought if they hadn’t made a single start by the end of their 5 yo year, they weren’t allowed to race. Guess not…

Dude’s got a pretty decent pedigree on him, though: https://www.equineline.com/Free-5X-Pedigree.cfm/Ain’t%20in%20No%20Hurry?page_state=DISPLAY_REPORT&reference_number=8582551&registry=T&horse_name=Ain’t%20in%20No%20Hurry&dam_name=Montera&foaling_year=2009&include_sire_line=Y

Maybe he matured like a warmblood? Glad he is getting his chance to race.

Each state makes up it’s own rules. It’s part of the charm of racing.

I know a couple of trainers that came with us to turfway at the end of the year to try to get their 5 year olds to break their maidens. One did win that night but the other had to go to Ohio to try to break it’s maiden. I don’t know if the other states have caps on ages for racing but it’s not too big of a deal if you don’t mind getting an out of state license and traveling there.

This is what it says in that BloodHorse article:

“In Kentucky, horses that haven’t won a race by the time they turn 6 get five attempts to win. If they don’t, they must leave the Kentucky and win a race before they can return to competition in the state.”

Hee, hee. Which came first, the name or the late start?
