What is the detriment of an overly large cart?

That’s a great cart…congratualtions

Thanks for the advice guys! I wasn’t sure if it would be better to make up some of the shaft length by putting him in the middle of them, or having him at the ends. I’ll move him out next time. The breeching should be long enough to actually go through the loops if I move him to the end of the shafts. There was so much baling twine involved, I just couldn’t include it on the breeching too.

That looks like a fine harness or for a 4 wheel.

That made me laugh! It’s a $150 crappy nylon harness!

I’m excited to try to get the jog cart sold so I can get a fitting harness (sans baling twine). I just need to order it some new tires and tubes, and figure out how to get the stinking things on.

With the longer shafts on this cart, do I need to be careful when buying a harness to make sure the traces are long enough? Or do they typically come pretty adjustable? I’ve never had a nice enough harness to know.

We may have a nice harness that would fit your chunky QH. It is on the ad for the draft cart. It is a biothane warmblood size but it is very adjustable. Let us know if you would like to see it.

You can always get trace extensions rather than x-long traces, that way if you do shorten the shafts, you dont have to get additional traces, just take the extensions off.

Get traces that will buckle into the breastcollar, they allow you a much greater adjustment ability. You will probably want a harness with a 4" wide saddle, and a tree inside the saddle for pulling a cart. Tree keeps the harness saddle up off the spine, no pressure on it.

Sending you a pm horsegeeks.

I didn’t mean fine like expensive. LOL I meant fine as in a style. They use fine harnesses for light weight carts like a Jerald.

So if I am understanding this you didn’t use the footmans loops in the photo’s? If you did they look to far back and the breaching doesn’t look like it would engage. When you move the horse forward the loops will be further back yet magnifying the problem. The breaching should reach forward to them. Just wanted to clarify as I wasn’t sure how you had it hitched.

You’re correct. My breeching wasn’t long enough to reach up to the footmans loops, and I had used all my baling twine in other places. The breeching is just wrapped around the shafts in the picture.

Thought i’d give you guys an update. I got to meet horsegeeks and Mr. horsegeeks this weekend. Turns out we only live a few minutes apart, so they brought their warmblood harness over to try. I’m happy to say that it fit very well, and we now have a non baling twined harness.

Here’s a pic and video from our quick drive tonight.

Love that I just let him fall into that downward transition…

congratulations, you guys look great!

Can I ask what do you have on your horse’s legs?? looks like socks that cover the coronet. I am seeking the same thing for fly protection and I’d love to know more. Thank you!

YES, i want to know what those things are too! Do share!

They’re called Summer Whinny’s. www.whinnywarmers.com

They are a bit cumbersome to get on, like pull on bell boots (hence the short work in them), so I wouldn’t recommend them to someone working their horse daily who is as lazy as I am. They also slouch a bit. I pull them up am and pm, so not the best in a boarding barn, but they cut the stomping 100%.

I really loved my neurotic horse’s fly pants (along with a full coverage sheet, mask, and hind boots…) but after he shredded them the second time, I gave up.
