What is the G-Line?

I kind of enjoy when these old “stallion” threads revive. It’s especially nice with younger stallions…people making their predictions and then knowing years later how they are going to turn out.

Kind of fun.

Can’t comment on Goldfuerst, but I want to point out that it Grannus was one of those stallions initially rejected by the approval committee. He was linebred to Goldfische II through Grande & Gottard.

He was not approved till he proved himself in sport – jumping of course! Many of his foals were on the small side…he was laughingly called “The Pony Maker.” But once his get matured and began to be active in sport…WOW!! People started to take a second look. Wonderful producer.

And someone mentioned the “Band of Brothers” produced o/o a Grundstein II mare. Now there is a SIXTH brother: Rockefeller. He was licensed in Germany then injured before he could test in Denmark. But, based on his genetics and the fact he has 5 full brothers who were approved, they gave him a license to breed 50 mares in 2012. It was re-newed in 2013 and then this year they finally granted him full lifetime approval based on the quality of those foal crops.

VERY strong genetics! And Rubin Royal is already on the Top 100 Dressage Sires list. Romanov is extremely successful in sport. I think one other of the “brothers” is doing GP as well. Talk about a proven cross!

And I bet that poor breeder is begging for a filly!

So it looks like the R and G lines go together pretty well.

We have a G line Hano mare: sire is Graf Goetz, dam is MS Wisper by Wertherson. She is an incredible jumper, has a great attitude, and while not flashy, is very correct for dressage too. I evented her for several years and now she is retired to a therapeutic riding center.

She was never inspected as a filly, so we took her a few years ago, when she was 14. She was the reserve champion in the Mare Performance Test and got a 9 for jumping scope and an 8.5 for style.

She was bred to Roc USA, and we have the baby (well, not really a baby now, almost 6!).

My first foundation mare, Maggie Skovgaard (May Sherif/Grandis) is an “old style” mare with the G head. She is now 24 years young and has produced foals that have done upper level dressage and also top level eventing and show jumping. The G line are simply athletes.

Donnerhall/Graphit used to be a “go to” combo for dressage horses.

I have a G-line mare by Gixibar http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/gixibar who will be 19 this year. I have two offspring out of her and while bred to a more modern stallion still produced the older style look, shorter legs, very stout bodies, big big muscled horses. She loved being a mom and is now being a schoolmaster teaching novice riders the ropes of lateral work and WTC. She is a great schoolie. I ride both of her offspring and while jumping lines on both sides I am doing dressage with both. They are very athletic and pretty talented, with the mare being a bit easier temperament wise. Gelding is just all boy and can be a PIA. My other mare is also G-line by a Gixibar son, she is much more refined and a lovely mover with just the kindest disposition. I bred her last year for a Luso X foal, got exactly what I wanted a buckskin filly! She got her dam’s huge hip, but is much more upright like her sire Saphiro.

I have ridden and bred quite a few G-line horses over the years and even owned Gixibar for a bit and rode him. I have liked all that I have handled/ridden for the most part. All were multi talented and as long as ridden well would work their heart out for you. You could not cram them together and get much out of them though. Correct work (my mare will just not give you anything unless asked correctly!) and they worked beautifully.

G and D line was always a classic cross back in the day. Gixibar shows that cross. I personally like the older style horses.

Well, in this case they certainly did! Rohdiamant is the sire of all of them…Grundstein II the damsire. Here’s the blurb on Rockefeller.
http://bluehors.dk/GB/Stallions/Rockefeller.aspx

I have a G-line gelding with Matcho on the dam side and he’s unbelievable! He has a great temperament and is very versatile. He was imported as a jumper after qualifying for the Bundeschampionat as a 5 year old. Not sure why he changed disciplines, but I got him as an upper level dressage horse. We haven’t shown yet but he was previously shown at I-1 with good scores and is particularly strong in the collected work. His piaffe and passage are incredible. If I can catch up and keep him sound as he gets older, I should have a competitive Grand Prix horse. I only have one data point but LOVE the g-line!

We are very excited about our young G-stallion. His is by All the Gold from the Gotthard line. He is doing some great things with Peter Pletcher in the hunter ring. His first get hit the ground last year and we are very pleased with them.

We have a Goldfuerst X TB daughter who has been a wonderful producer for us. We have kept a couple of her daughters in our program and her colts (geldings) have went into sport. Very ammy friendly temperaments, good movers and good over fences. Fairly large, somewhat “plain” horses until they move, then WOW. The daughter had her first foal in 2013, a black colt and very pretty.

My old stallion is Goldstien on the dam side by a D line stallion.

Even though I’m terribly biased, he really has produced the goods in the foal department. He competed to Inter 2 but retired due to injury and for “fun” they used to just take him out and pop him over 1.40m tracks.

But his foals to his credit have all been the same big movers with an even bigger jump with beginner safe temperaments. He’s got one competing GP at the moment, one of his daughters was 5yr old Young Horse champion a few years ago (I have her too!) and there’s a fair few out eventing and show jumping. It’s just a shame his old owner never marketed him terribly well. He’s getting old now, but still had 5 PPT with live cover and 2 from chilled. All first go except the first chilled mare. I’m really hoping to get a colt from my Winterkoening x Lander mare to continue on his legacy.

Here is a new foal with that typical G=line butt. His pedigree has Graphit - Gotthard -Graf Genius (twice to Gotthard) - Grenadier (Grande grandson through Gruenwald) as well as three other lines tracing back to Goldfisch II. He is a little stud muffin - already checking out the other mares to see if they’re in season AND sharing the milk bar when their foals nurse. Very strong opinions about life but smart and co-operative.

Works now…cute…thanks for sharing!

Ironman Gotthard Great Grandson

One should also mention Ironman whose dam is a granddaughter of Gotthard. Ironman was imported by Doni Biggs who also imported Gonzo.

Ironman has a personality larger than life! He is a kind, quiet, sensitive stallion, who produces Intelligent, conformationally correct, sweet natured foals. I have 2 and will have a 3rd next year. Temperment is extremely important to me, as are looks, and talent. Ironman gives you all three.

I also have an 11 year old mare, Sparkle, whose dam boast not only Gotthard, but Grande as well.

The temperments of the G-line from what I have experienced are just incredible. Sweet, kind, and very, very intelligent. People minded horses.

WOW, I thought I was the only one who loved the G-line Butt! Thanks Canterbury Court, yes, great power in those G-line Butts

Here are what pictures I have of Gotthard, am always trying to find more-

Whatever happened to Gonzo? I always remember his pictures in the old COTH Stallion issues. He had incredible form, and IIRC wasn’t his dam the full sister to the great showjumper Deister?

Gonzos dam was indeed a full sister to Deister, Deister was I believe 1971, Gonzos sister was 1973, they were by Diskant by Dwinger by Detektiv. Diskants dam was all A and F line. Deisters dam was a half TB by Alderschild who shows up frequently in jumpers, the dam side was all A line. I always loved Gonzo.
The first picture is Deister. The second is Gonzo, the third is Gonzo as a two year old.
