What is the “must subscribe to” western riding magazine?
Is it Horse & Rider or Western Horseman? Pros & cons of the magazines, if you would. I’m interested in western equitation (I think you call it western horsemanship?), western pleasure and lite reining. Magazines with some QH articles would be good.
(I already get the QH journal because I love QHs.)

Western Horseman is a serious magazine about the culture of the western type horses, with some stories about other at times.
Horse and Rider is different, more about training, some alternative training, both are interesting, each one in it’s own way.
You need to get both for a while to decide what suits your interest best.
We have received Western Horseman for many decades now, it is an interesting chronicle of the western horse as it has changed over the decades.
IMHO…Horse & Rider is a waste of money. Its all fluff now and no real substance.
I like the Quarter Horse News a lot and need to renew my subscription now that I think about it. The Equine Chronicle does have some good articles regarding pleasure or horsemanship, but there is A LOT of advertising too.
I don’t get Western Horseman, but I would definitely get that over H&R.

I agree, that is exactly what I had written, H&R was fluff. :lol:
I edited it, is not polite to run a nice magazine down, just because the past decade has geared more to novices and feel good type stuff.

lol - that’s why I said it was my opinion of the magazine. It caters to a different crowd than what it used to aim for. It still works for many people and it may be exactly what the OP wants. H&R does cover what the OP is interested in.
Western Horseman would be my magazine of choice as far as western horsemanship and culture. I also get Equus (my for 30 years) which always freaks me out because I read that stuff and then worry constantly that my horse has whatever issue they are featuring in a given month. It seems to me like Horse and Rider and Equus seem to duplicate each other (may be published by the same company for all I know.)

I also like Eclectic Horseman - not the commercial magazine that H&R and WH are, no glossy pages hardly any ads, lots of substantive material with good photos to illustrate. A little pricey but well worth the cost. :yes:
Second for Eclectic Horseman.
I always liked Western Horseman as well, a class act and always has varying and interesting articles about horses in use for stockhorse pursuits, whether it be ranching, rodeo, or ‘performance western events’ such as mounted shooting, cutting, reining, etc.
Ooh, just ordered Eclectic Horseman based on the thread. Some of the free articles on their site were very interesting and well done. Can’t wait to read it.

Another good magazine that is geared toward trail riders is Trail Blazer. The content on vet/equine care has been excellent. They had several segments on wound care that were helpful for an issue we had with my father in-law’s dog. The vet kept the magazine. Some fluff, but more interesting stuff than the more Trail Riders magazine.

Quarter Horse Journal is great and it comes with our membership to the AQHA. For those who are not members it is a geat incentive to become a member!

Hmmm…must have been a special back when my daughter became a youth member. Now that you mention it I don’t remember getting the Journal before then but it is a great magazine. I love just browsing when we get it and then I go back and pick through the articles when I have more time on my hands.

I have heard good things about Trail Blazer. I may look into that one.
Trail Rider magazine has become too “fluffy” - nothing wrong with foundation for people who are novice riders/owners, but that’s all there is.
Eclectic Horseman gets my vote too.
