I was looking at my mare’s pedigree and noticed a horse with 101 starts. I have heard of Kingston and supposedly he started 130 some times. Who holds the record?
What is the average number of starts now, and fifty years ago?
Thanks in advance.
Someone on the pedigreequery.com asked the exact same question recently. I don’t remember the answer, but we have 3 horses with more than 100 starts (Sir Juli Go - 135, his 1/2-sister Strawberry Gogo with 133 & Veni Visa - no relation to the first two, with 113).
And all I remember - we’re nowhere near the record!
So 100 starts is not uncommon?
I didn’t ask this any other place so I have no answers or frame of reference. Would still like to know who holds the record and how many.
one of my guys, Mariatom, started 144 times.
I certainly would not call over 100 starts common by any means…actually quite rare in the grand scheme of things.

A horse in the 1890s called Logan supposedly made 388 starts. I say supposedly as this was pre equibase and proper record keeping etc.
Over 100, while not unheard of, isn’t exactly common.
I had a hunter I showed, years ago, who had supposedly started 111 times. His name was Endow. Can some kind person check for me, and see if it’s the truth?
He had hellacious ankles on him, but a heart as big as all outdoors. Loved that horse!
My boy Grady started 104 times, and retired sound!

This is one of my favorite girls here at the farm. She is the coolest horse. Toothless wonder (she’s a cribber.)

Thanks for sharing. These are really interesting.
Zippy Chippy ran 100 times without winning
He has been retired to Old Friends Cabin Creek.
I don’t have the TB Times annual record book in front of me, but another American runner listed with the most career wins
Kingston (1884 - 1912): 138 Starts: 89 - 33 - 12, $138,917
Kingston still holds the career record for most races won, 89. Although the most stakes victories remains Exterminator.
Okay, here’s my childhood horse.

He was my Brandy.
And the bravest, kindest creature I ever had the honor to know.
Got him as a giveaway for my 12th birthday. Did children’s hunters and my dad did first level with him, but mostly we just had fun.
I miss him still.
What was his pedigree?
He was by Tulyar, out of a Menow mare, I think.
According to the Thoroughbred Times Racing Almanac, here is your winner:
Hiblaze, 1935: 406 starts.
My friend just found out her OTTB had 114 starts and she felt so bad about it that she will hardly ride him anymore because she thinks he deserves a break lol. I’ll have to show her this, maybe she’ll get over it. 406 starts, that’s nuts!! How many years did he run?
edit
HiBlaze 406 Starts: 79 wins (not too far from the record of 89)- 73 places- 52 show, $32,647 Raced for 14 years!!!
My horse had 13 starts over four years. LOL.

Hey! I remember Veni Visa running up here!!!
An acquaintance of mine owns a gelding named One Purpose; I believe he had 262 starts, and a good career ponying afterwards.
