What Is the Smoking/Nonsmoking Rule At Your Barn?

I have boarded at barns that don’t allow smoking inside the barn but do allow it on the grounds; barns that do not allow smoking in the barn or on the property anywhere near the barn; and at one barn where one barn helper went just outside and stood under the eaves by the door to smoke and when I met the BM in the barn she was about to tack up a lesson horse and had a saddle blanket in one hand and a lit cigarette in the other.

So just curious about other barns’ rules.

I used to think every horsekid learned about the risks of smoking in barns with their first reading of Black Beauty, but kids are so different these days I don’t know if they read anything at all anymore!

No smoking on the property. There is one older boarder who smokes near her tack area but she’s very careful so we pretty much leave her alone.

No smoking in the barn. People can smoke anywhere they want outside. I just ask they pick up the butts and dispose of properly. Not only does it keep the area tidy. I and they know that the cigarette has been completely put out and a smoldering butt won’t blow somewhere and ignite something. I would rather smell cigarette smoke then some people’s perfume and or cologne. I have no problem with people smoking. As long as they are conscientious. To each their own.
Contrary to popular believe barn fires are far and few. Barn fires from spontaneous hay is not even kept as a statistic. In fact they are so few Barn, horse or livestock fires there are no statistics are kept on them in a separate category. They are lumped together with all Ag buildings and structures regardless of use. The vast majority of “barn” fires were because the barn was being used for other “commercial” business activates. Number 1 cause of “barn” fires, a heat source. As told to me by my insurance agent. And can be confirmed by going to the Government website that keeps yearly statistics on this stuff.

No smoking on the property. Anywhere. And I am a smoker and do not mind this rule at ALL.

No smoking anywhere on the premises, in or out of a barn. I won’t hire a worker if they are a smoker. Fire risk is the most obvious reason. The risk may be slight, but the consequences are devastating. Plus, not all people are as careful as others. There might be a trainer who smokes in a concrete aisle way and is careful about disposing of butts, but the next smoker might be a careless guest.

Also:

 1. I don’t like the appearance of people standing around smoking–that’s not the professional image I want people to have of my facility.

 2. People never clean up after themselves they way they are supposed to and I do not want my property littered with cigarette butts nor do I need one more thing to clean up after.

 3. Having a smoking area or a smoking policy would be one more thing for me and my other workers to have to monitor. Don’t tell me that in the pouring rain smokers aren’t going to try to sneak a cigarette in one of the farm buildings.

 4. It has been my experience that workers who smoke take (or try to take) more breaks because they need to smoke. I’m sorry, but being a smoker does not earn you extra breaks/break time.

As far as advantages to allowing smoking on my property, I don’t see any.

If you’re smoking at my barn, it had better be because you are on fire. Otherwise, nope.

No smoking permitted in or near the barns. It would be no smoking anywhere on the property, but the BO’s husband still smokes. Fortunately, he’s very, very careful about it and how he disposes of what’s left.

We even have a sign up that says that.

No smoking is allowed anywhere on our property. We have a $50 fine if a renter, boarder, or associate thereof is found smoking let alone dropping butts.

0 tolerance. I have friends that smoke, and while it makes no sense to me, they are still my friends, but I will be $50 richer if they do it while on my land.

I believe every barn I have ever boarded at has a no smoking anywhere on premises rule.

I imagine you could smoke in your car… but no walking around, no going in barns etc while smoking.

I know one smoker at my barn, she takes a quick puff on the short strip of road we ride along between the ranch and the park trails - no smoking on the ranch, no smoking in the park, so that couple hundred feet along the road is the only “legal” place to do it!

We cannot smoke in our cars.

No smoking anywhere on the premises.

NO SMOKING on my property ~ house nor barn nor sheds

NO SMOKING !!! on my property ``` house nor barn nor sheds !!!

 • this is written in all contracts with builders and repairmen ~!

No smoking anywhere on the premises.

No smoking on the property. Unless you are the hay guys, in which case they can smoke in their truck. Not as much a worry about fire as that I get migrains from the smell.

No smoking anywhere at all on the property. But this is Utah, so that’s easy. Smokers are a relatively rare breed here. We have a no alcohol rule too.

smoking isn’t allowed in public in most places these days. If you allow boarders onto your barn, it’s public. If you have any barn workers, it’s a workplace. Therefore it’s illegal to allow smoking where a worker or public person might have to breathe the fumes.

Zero tolerance. No smoking on property at all.

People still smoke?

Not allowed on the premises. I’m not sure I’d be comfortable boarding at a place that allowed it.

Anyone with a cigarette in their mouth here, will have it shot out of their mouth.

Although, really, that’s only happened once.

Every farmer I have ever known has a no smoking anywhere on the property rule. Example: 400 acre farm in Massachusetts (are there any of those left?)- no smoking anywhere on those 400 acres.

but some I knew smoked inside their house!
