What is this footing?

I’ve seen so many photos from Geneva and I can’t for the life of me figure out what this footing is. It looks very hard but I’m sure it’s not, mostly because this horse is barefoot and also because hard footing at this level seems…very unlikely.

Any ideas?

It’s sand with synthetic fibers according to the FEI documentation

In Europe, they often drag and roll the footing, so it’s super even everywhere. But most importantly, they really water it. An FEI rider I rode with said it should be wet when you walk the course. They have microphones at the jumps so the sound of takeoff and landing is magnified. But this is as close to wet sand on the beach as you get, which is supposedly the most ideal surface for jumping in terms of grip/cushion. They need both at this level.

Do they use the waxed fiber footing in Europe?

Thank you!! Do you know why they roll it? Very wet makes sense.

Rolling it will compress the footing and help keep it from shifting,

Yes, but the surface for high-level showjumping is very specific and some wax surfaces can hold the hoof a little too much.

That’s been my experience on waxed footing. I was curious if it was used over there. Thx!
