What is your favorite "type" of cat?

Nope. Although there are some ferals around. I’m currently working on two ferals.

I have always had cats, but the big explosion in population came in late 2015 when Cat Lady died. She was my home aide client who had 16 cats. I had been seeing her six days a week, so all of said cats knew me well already, and I promised her the last day she was there that I would take care of them. That was the only way she would agree to let me call for an ambulance. Of course, both of us expected just a short hospital stay, then return home, not a several-week hospital stay and death. But I did make her the promise.

Her place was very rural, and her cats had free access in and out but chose out 80% of the time. So these were already country life cats. My place is very rural; I’ve always had a couple of barn cats for rodent patrol, and I have had many live up into their teens here, the champion being Emily Dickinson, who made it to at least 16. So I imported Cat Lady’s cats to my farm, which gave them two things they were already well acquainted with, me and my car. However, while I love cats, I simply could not put everybody inside. So most of them stayed out. I did over the next few months rehome several to various places, but many of Cat Lady’s cats are still here.

So, I have an indoor pride and an outdoor pride. All are petted, vetted, and cared for, but the two groups do not meet. Eight inside is my limit. I do have a very rodent-free farm.

All cats. I prefer shorthairs, but love them all. What I’ve had the most of is black cats, then solid grays.

I’ve had cats since I was an infant. My parents had a mom cat who had her kittens right around the time I was born, and insisted on putting them in the bassinet with me.

I’m meeting a potential new-to-me cat on Thursday. She’s another solid gray, around 12 years old, has hyperthyroidism but otherwise healthy. She’s said to be extremely friendly. Yes, I have a soft spot for the old ones.

Years ago, I adopted a little cat from the MSPCA. She was said to be 12, but my vet thought much older. Old enough that her spay scar was gone, and the vet had to convince the MSPCA that she didn’t need to be spayed because she already was.

So she came with hyperthyroidism and bad teeth, had to fix the former (she got irradiated) before the latter. A year or two later, she got a lump on one front leg, which turned out to be bone cancer so she had her leg amputated. Later on, kidney disease. And eventually the cancer came back in a rear leg, and it was just too much for her, and me.

I had Myrtle for 5 years, spent well into 5 figures in vet bills, and would do it all again because she was such a sweetheart… To the point that she loved getting her subQ fluids, because it meant I couldn’t get up and leave.

I swear there is a sign at our gate saying “Waifs and Strays Welcome”.

A skinny white cat turned up and basically said I live here now. Long story short, grew into a gorgeous 7kg ragdoll. He hunts like a demon (how, when he’s glow white, I have no idea), and is cuddly and affectionate (most of the time, haha). We call him the ragdog as he comes when called etc.

His name is Barnaby, an upgrade from when he was living in the barn as Barney.

Checking that out!

Psst psst…what’s a voidling?

black cats are now seemingly on some threads as voids, so I assume a voidling is a small black cat.

A voidling is a black cat. I learned that word from this thread, then Googled it. When I got home I called Ursula Kitteh a voidling. She was not impressed.

if you own a black cat and a camera, instinctively you know what a voidling is! It’s the creature that creates the void in your photo where you thought a cat was…

I’ve never had a black cat, but when I was a kid we had a Russian Blue (dark gray). My father was a serious amateur photographer, and he spent HOURS working on taking a good picture of Jacko.

After I’m done giving Dizzy his hugs and cuddles I turn him upside down and play “slide the kitty” on my legs. When he gets to the bottom he just lays there until I make him move.

Hmmm … I would’ve thought a “voidling” would be a cat that voided (peedin) his/her litter box …
