Something tore a little flap of leather on the inside of my stirrup leather. I’d like to glue it down so that it doesn’t get any worse. What should I use?
I’d use Bostik (don’t know if it’s a trademark in US too),it’s the same glue shoemakers use
Shoe Goo. Popular with ballroom dancers who use it to re-glue the suede soles of their shoes. It has some flex in it, works on leather, and holds well.
As long as this is just a cosmetic issue, gluing it should be OK but I don’t know how that will compromise the strength of the stirrup leather, which is a safety concern. If this is a surface scuff that peeled a thin layer of leather up, you might be OK gluing it down but I’m not the one to answer that.
Gotta say, great thread topic though. I can’t count how many times I’ve wondered which is the correct glue to use for a specific project.
Target carries Shoe Goo!
I may as well bring it home and cure it properly with the hairdryer.
It’ll have to be No Stirrups December for a day or two.
I’d personally take it to a shoe repair place and have them sew it. I think running up stirrups will unglue (is that a word? unstick?) it pretty quickly.
My saddler told me to use super glue on a couple little nicks on my saddle to stabilize them, so that is what I would try.
It didn’t darken the leather?
I never got around to doing it, but it was a black saddle, so that wasn’t a concern.
