What kind of horse do you use for CTR/Endurance?

Hi, thought this would be a good subject.

So, tell us about your partner…

I have a 21 (almost 22)yo Morab mare. Just 15H, with a ground eating trot that goes on forever. Bought her in-utero and she’s been my compradre through all sorts of turmoils and triumphs.

Here’s a shot of her at GMHA fall foliage ride when she was 18.

and another of us goofing off last winter…

Betsyk, there are breeders out there now who breed “sporthorse” Arabians. They’re the ones you’ll want to contact when you’re serious about buying an endurance Arabian.

Although in my experience, most Arabs do well at trail and endurance. If a horse is bred for performance instead of halter, they should do quite well.

My older gelding, now 23, is still ready to rock and roll down the trail. I had thought to retire him and let Casper (7 y/o) take over as my premiere riding horse, but Conny has other ideas! So my old man will continue to haul my butt around until he tells me he’s ready to be a pasture puff.

Arabs are like the Energizer Bunny; they just keep going and going!

My distance horse was a little grade palomino, she had a very big trot and big walk but a very lousy canter. I think she might have had some stdbred in her, arab, qh maybe? she was barefoot most of her life, i did put shoes on her at times but only fronts, she had no problem with distance but i never did 100 with her, i think she could have in her younger days but not sure about me.

This link is elsewhere but it should be here. The link is to a list of types of horses competing in 2004 as tracked by the main endurance ride organization, AERC.

Isn’t Gotcha Covered sire a Spanish Sulphur stud by the name of Takita? Is your stud Insider also Sulphur as well? I know that Mr. Painter is a large fan of using the horses from the Mountain Home Range in his efforts to save the Barb.

I’ve ridden several different arabs, a arab/appy cross, a foundation bred appy, and am now competing on a TWH. I just bought the walker this fall, but he’s done 2 rides and just loved it–hope to do some 50’s with him this spring. My son rode a POA when he was little–that was way cute, he went through the vet lines himself (he was 9) and trotted his pony out and everything.

Alot of people swear by the CMK Arabs so if you want to get into endurance riding you would be well mounted with one. Go to cmkarabians.com, or go to endurance.net and search ridecamp archives. You’ll find much about CMK arabs and endurance.

She is LOVELY!

I ride an 11 YO Morgan mare. Her trot also goes on forever – unfortunately, it is more sewing maching than ground eating I’ll have to see if I have any pictures I can share.

Anita,
I have conditioned her some, though we are in the process of buying a home and I’m thinking
most of the extra cash (for awhile) is going to
go into new fence, stalls etc. so maybe not so much with rides and showing this year…though
it is okay, she is a ‘foster horse’ too, as we
are foster parents… so she is a wonderful horse.

I’m curious about how endurance riders find Arabs bred for endurance. I’m sure there are certain Arab bloodlines to look for and breeders who do this. I’m currently an eventer whose OTTB’s are aging out of the sport. I grew up riding CMK-bred Arabs and I’m really looking forward to owning another Arab in the next few years and trying endurance with this one. Any advice on where to start? The actual purchase is probably still a few years away.

Pistol,Thank you, we certainly love him.

You have great photos on your site and look like you have great memories from your travels & Riding. I’d love to ride in that river! Maybe someday.

Anita, our (one and only) Morab is BLT Nikita by Kimtut out of Windmere Erica (Wabash Mr Magic x Windrift Noriah)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

OH!! You have one of Ted’s horses! We are good friends with Ted - we’ve known each other since we both started with Morabs in the 80’s. In fact, I think I have pictures of Nikita that I took some years ago when she was young. I’ll have to check my files…

We are new to Morab’s and have thought about breeding her to Bathesda Carbon Copy (Morgan) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Oh, yes, we are very familiar with Gordon’s beautiful Morgan stallion! He also owned the wonderful champion Morab stallion, Windmere Magic, who was related to your Nikita. Magic died suddenly just a couple of years ago. A real loss to the breed. They dedicated a whole “Morab Perspective” (breed newsmagazine) to Magic. Magic was out of the same dam as Erica - they might even have been full siblings. I’d have to check who Magic’s sire was again, but I know it was a Lippitt Morgan as was Erica’s. Ted still has Erica last I heard.

Did you know that Dr. James Barnett of Tennessee has one of Ted’s Morab geldings, BLT Marshall Ben Tut? Jim and Marshall are tearing up the endurance trails. They go all over the country, even out to New Mexico for the XP rides. They’ve done 8 rides just in 2005 already! I have Marshall listed on my endurance Morab website. Are you using Nikita for endurance or planning on it? If so, I need to add her, too! Are you keeping in touch with Ted, and letting him know how Nikita is doing?

I can tell you a little about Nikita’s pedigree - Winddrift Noriah was registered as a Half Arabian, but she was more like 15/16 Arabian with one Thoroughbred great granddam back there on the dam line. She was approved for Morab production by the very first Morab registry in the early 1970’s. The leadership of that registry felt that a little TB in the mix was not a bad thing. Noriah’s was Carol’s very first horse to start breeding Morabs, and she put some outstanding Morabs on the ground down out of that mare. Carol is still going up in Wisconsin, and is one of the oldest Morab breeders. One of her most famous Morabs is the golden palomino CDE stallion, Windmere Royal Topaz, in Wisconsin. I’ve seen him in person, and he’s GORGEOUS. He, too, goes back to Noriah on his dam line.

Wabash Mr. Magic was a Lippitt Morgan stallion. Kimtut, if I remember correctly, was Ted’s first stallion - an Arabian, and it seems like he had some Ansata breeding and other Egyptian bloodlines. He was gelded eventually, and sold. Ted found a Morab stud colt, Gentle Ben, that he bought and used, instead. And Ben is an exceptional horse. Ted sold him to another breeder a couple of years ago, and kept a son who is the first pinto Morab in the breed. But Ted gelded that horse, too, just recently as he’s not breeding anymore now.

Are you a member of the Morab registry (International Morab Registry)? IMR Morabs are the only registered Morabs who are recognized as a breed by the AERC, USDF, NATRC, USCTA, the palomino registry and the pinto registry. Did you know that Ted wrote the only book ever written on the Morab breed? We are in the book.

It sounds like you ought to be on my endurance Morab list at Yahoo Groups, too! Wouldn’t you like to join us there? There are some very well known Morab riders on there already - like Suzanne Hayes of Montana who owns the great champion Kootenai Zizerro. He’s 25 this year!

No, the Lipizzan stud used some Shagya blood following WWII. When I visited Piber, the stud farm in Austria, many of the mares in the mare herd reminded me of Shagya mares.

Any breed, except the purebred Arabian, has not been allowed for 200 years. The Shagya breed is like the Trakehner in some aspects, except they allow Thoroughbred as an acceptable outcross, along with Shagya or Arabian.

The other warmblood breeds outcross with anything they believe will improve their phenotype. This is why you find any breed in the Dutch, Holsteiner, Hanoverian etc. And, of course one of the most influential stallions of all, RAMZES, founder of the “R” line, who was a TB X Shagya cross.

My endurance partner is a Pure Arab of CMK lineage. (Ben Rabba granddaughter)

At the AERC website there is a list of breeds which competed in 2004 giving a breed breakdown and numbers. It is a long list with a variety of breeds the top 5 are:

Arabian 13,822
1/2 Arab 2,271
grade 1,772
Arab Cross 811
Appaloosa 689

go to http//www.aerc.org/membership_breeds.asp

Shagyas are included with 8 recorded, there are some large breeds listed. Very interesting.

I am currently riding two 6 yr olds. O Night Divine (Diva) is a PB Arabian, about 50% Russian lines. She has done two LD’s, one CTR and one 50 miler. I bought her as a 3 yr old from the breeder. She’s a solid 15.1 hands now, has a RHR of 28. She really has the heart and lungs for distnce riding. Right from day one she has been a VERY forward horse, loves to be in the lead. She just digs into the trail and keeps on moving forward. Tires me out trying to keep the pace down on short rides around home. I’m hoping that maturity will mellow her. I hope, I hope, I hope…

My other child is Mighty Mouse (aka Mouse or Brat Boy). He was a rescue basicly. He has a smidge of qtr in him so is registerable as a 1/2 Arab. Gotta get that done. He’s quite the character, loves working cows! He can cover ground with a huge trot (only 14.3) and is a very talented jumper. I think he would look great in harness too.

I’d love to attach pics but don’t know how to send them to this forum.

Love the name Insider- never heard it used before, though sounds great! Do you have pictures?

Robyn, thank you for the compliment on our boy. We surely love him,
and he has that ArabTrakehner noble quality.

His sire Carino E, an approved stallion,
was approved in Germany and imported to Canada.
His Dam is a PSB approved Arabian mare. Hence,
both parents are approved Trakehner = he is registered full Trakehner. His dam has both her
Arabian Horse Assoc. papers, and was also issued her PSB American Trakehner Association papers upon approval with the ATA.

If your gelding is by an approved
sire and out of an approved mare, then he can be
registered full Trakehner. If only his sire was approved, he can be registered 1/2 Trakehner.

Karino’s Fire (our boy) is also registered as 1/2 Arabian, since his dam is
registered as Arabian with Arabian Horse.
Who is your gelding’s sire? Check out the ATA web site at AmericanTrakehner Association
You will find useful information on the past and current stallions and the registration process. I would love to see a photo of you horse, I so admire the Shagya lines.

Hi Anita, I just aquired a Morab mare and look forward to checking out your site. I have acctually thought of breeding her to our Trakehner stallion for my next distance horse. The horse I currently use is an Arab-Trakehner stallion. He is double registered, 1/2 Arabian and also full Trakehner. The Morab is 15 years old, though I might try her this year in some shorter distances and see if she likes it. Always nice to have a second horse.
