What kind of mares to use with Corland?

Hi all,

Looking forward to next season already. I think I really like Corland for my mare, but I’m having a hard time finding any intel on what type of mares he should be used for. Can anybody here offer some insight?

Thank you!

Fertile ones! Just know going in that Corland semen is tricky. It can get pregnancies, but most who use successfully have young, fertile mares and great vets!

He has been used extensively by VDL Stud with Indoctro mares. FWIW.

We used Corland this year on two of our mares. One open (non-maiden and 16 years of age) and one with a foal at side (9 years of age).

The semen looked good under the microscope, but he is known to not be a tremendously fertile stallion. Needless to say, the mare with the foal at side took and the other mare did not.

Generally Corlands are very trainable with laid back temperaments. VDL used Corland as a refining influence in their own breeding program in which he bred well with their heavier Ahorn mares.

Conformation wise he needs a mare with good loins .

We have used Corland on our Lux Z mare. Semen was great and we had pregnancy on the first try. I do not know where people heard that his semen was not of good fertility. He has plenty of foals born every year in NA. He is a stallion relatively easy to cross. Great mind. I would use him of mares with size as with average to smaller mares, he tends to tproduce small. Also, I have noted on some foals I have seen, that the hind legs are not perfect so I would use him with a mare that is correct behind, especially in its pasterns and fetlocks. He usualy brings plenty of strenght, a good mind and good form over jump.
