What made Seattle Slew a great sire?
Aside from Busher, whom did War Admiral produce?
Bee Mac (filly winner of Hopeful Stakes).
Blue Peter (champion juvenile)
Striking (stakes winner - and her line led to Numbered Account).
Busanda (stakes winner, defeating males. Of course, dam of Buckpasser, too)

Kentucky Derby winners from WA fillies (either directly or within a few generations) are Iron Liege, Swaps, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, and Alysheba.

Needles can be found in the pedigree of Sri Pekan.

I friend of mine IRL (who owned race horses) told me way back when that his friend had a very good filly in training with D. Wayne Lucas, and that that filly, Landeluce, was going to win the Derby. Sadly, she died so young. Slew sired some very good horses.

There have been some great runners who did not sire a lot of winners. Anyone else remember Needles? And what about Secretariat?
Here is a question for you- does anyone know what other horses sold through the sale that SS did, for what money, and what they made? I have no doubt that SS was the buy of the sale, but were there any “Green Monkey’s” ?
The year (1975) that Slew went through the FTJUL sale was sort of the early eve of the ‘Green Monkey’ era. That year the average price for a Northern Dancer yearling was $89K. Yearling averages for other proven, popular North American sires were then in the mid 5 figures. At same sale the year before, the eventual 1976 KD winner Bold Forbes had sold for $15.2K.

Slew brought a reasonable price ($17.5K) for the colt of a freshman sire & dam. His sire’s avg. was a little over $28K, somewhat inflated by one filly, Anya Ylina out of Lyphard’s dam, who’d sold for $145K. Another of Bold Reasoning’s ylg. colts (Bold Shot) went through same sale as Slew, selling for $9.5K.

Slew actually had the highest first crop yearling average ($380K) of any of the 70s TC winners (Secretariat’s avg. was $378K, Affirmed’s $370K). Ironically, 1978 TC ‘reserve champion’ Alydar’s first crop yearling average sale price was roughly double that of the actual TC winners at $767K. That was in 1982, by which time Northern Dancer’s avg. ylg. price was close to $900K, iirc.

The top price ($1.5M) for Affirmed’s first crop as ylgs. was the bay colt Argosy, out of Slew’s dam, My Charmer. I’d argue that her 1984 colt, Seattle Dancer by Nijinsky II, was the first of the real ‘Green Monkeys’, selling for $13.1M at KEEJUL85 though in that case the buyer did at least get a G1SW on the Euro turf for the exorbitant sum paid.

Slew was also the sire of Houston, a sire who stood for hunters; Gold Meridian was also liked for hunters.
I’ve got a mare by Gold Meridian, and sure enough she’s got the most perfect daisy-cutter, flat kneed trot you would want for a hunter. Her canter is absolutely effortless and very comfortable to sit. Aside from being a bit too light boned in the legs, she’s got a massive body, standing a solid 16.3. Body-wise, she looks more like a warmblood.

A friend of mine stood a stakes winning stallion by Slew O Gold out of a Lyphard mare that had some very fancy movement. I wanted to breed one of my other mares to him to hopefully get a sport baby, but he had to be put down last year after a long illness. :frowning: So for me, I’m certainly not opposed to having SS in any pedigree.

War Admiral’s Lady was dam of Crafty Admiral, champion Handicap horse 1952. He is the sire of Affirmed’s dam Won’t Tell You.

My Charmer also produced Ghashtah, dam of El Nafis (both nothing as racemares). Yet El Nafis was dam of Nasheej (by Swain) a G2 winner of over $300,000.
