What makes a hunt horse a great hunt horse?

A horse who is a partner. A horse who inherently gets it. A working horse. Handy but calm. Can regulate themselves and expend the energy but doesn’t waste it. Is fine with 100 hounds flooding around their legs on a tight trail. A horse who can do their part, figure out a tricky situation. Who can wait for other horses who aren’t as confident. A horse who keeps one eye on the huntsman and let’s you know it. A horse who stands at checks, who can pass others and be passed, who can also ride abreast with another horse without having to be in front. A horse who will walk back to the trailer when everyone is running.

Oh, I though of another one!

A horse that pricks his ears and focuses on a fox bolting from cover, giving up the opportunity for a view and maybe a Tally Ho!

Yes, I have ridden a horse that does this, and gotten first view.

Mine all watch the hounds. It’s interesting how many horses (and riders) don’t pay attention to the hounds.

That is why I habitually follow bassets and only occasionally foxhounds: I love the hound work.
