What One Race in History Would You Like to Be At?

Random musings this morning while I’m waiting for work, which already seems to be starting its Christmas holiday.

You have a time machine with the ability to give you ONE trip back to any era, any location, to be physically present (with great seats assumed) at the race of your choosing. What race will you attend?

For me, it’s a hard call, also having to choose between exciting race (i.e. closest/most fierce, not necessarily with the greatest horses) or great horse. But after consideration, I’d wind up going to the Man o’ War vs. Sir Barton match.

Secretariat’s Belmont.

Me too, Laurie B. It still brings tears to my eyes every time they replay it.

Another choice would be Affirmed-Alydar (whole TC if allowed, but Belmont if not).

Seabiscut and War Admerial

1993 Breeders Cup Classic, so I can put a bunch of money on Arcangues to win!

I think Secretariat’s Belmont is high on the list. Also, Zenyatta’s Breeders Cup win.

BUT…while I saw it on tv I’d have loved to have been there in 1962 to see when Olden Times won the San Juan Capistrano at 1-3/4 miles. Olden Times, a sprinter, basically a miler, a rabbit for, I think, Prove it. Shoemaker broke him on top (said he’d NEVER been out-broken when on Olden Times) and built up a 24 length lead, nursing it along to win by a NOSE. I went to the Eventing World Championships at the Kentucky Horse Park (the year it opened) in 1978, and visited the farm that was standing Olden Times and was able to pat his nose.

I, too, for Secretariat’s Belmont. Not only for the quarter century since the last Triple Crown winner, but for the distance Secretariat won by, and for the record time he did it in.

I watch the replay often on YouTube.

It’s a fairly recent race but the 2007 Belmont Stakes. It’s my all-time favorite race and call with Rags to Riches stumbling at the break then fighting Curlin down the stretch. She was a heck of a racing filly.

Just one is hard but I’d have to vote for Secretariat’s Belmont as well.

Secretariat’s Belmont

1967 Woodward Stakes when Damascus beat Buckpasser and Dr. Fager.

Do the Powers That Be give a second choice? Jockey Club Gold Cup, Exceller, Affirmed, and the immortal Seattle Slew.

Ever since I read Kentucky Derby Winner by Isabel McLennan McMeekin, I’ve wished I could have been at the first Kentucky Derby. So that, or Team Spirit’s Grand National.

When Upset beat Man O War. Clean house at the window…

Have to jump in with those going back to the '73 Belmont.

Next, probably Zenyatta’s BC Classic win.

Or any of Ruffian’s races - except the final one.

Finally, Carry Back’s KD win. Believe that’s the first time I became obsessed with horse racing - 1st grade.

I am on the same bandwagon as most…the '73 Belmont

Another vote for Secretariat’s Belmont!

'38 pimlico special, of course. (but only because i know how it came out.)

One of 2: Either at Seattle Slew’s Triple Crown win or at Affirm’s Triple Crown win.
