What piece of hardware am I looking for?

Imagine you have a round pen panel. But instead of connecting it to other panels to make a pen, you want to attach it to a solid wall. I have done this two ways. Now I want to find one of those two ways and I can’t, that’s where I hope you can help me!

One way is to attach a specific type of hardware, often used for swinging gates, that has a male and female side. If you face them both the same direction, you could pick up the panel and hang it on the fasteners, but if you have sneaky animals, it’s best to have them going in opposite directions. This is what I may end up having to get because of my inability to find the other thing.

The other thing is much simpler, and can be used when you don’t need to swing a panel or gate. It’s just a band of metal that is shaped in a semi-circle to go around the panel. On either side of the semi-circle it’s flat with a hole in each side for a screw. I thought they were called panel clamps or pipe clamps but I have used those names and gotten nowhere. And I’m not finding them in the pipe or fencing area of the store, but I have not been to a good hardware store yet. I just think it’s funny that I can’t find a picture of what I’m talking about online, seems like the simplest and most logical way to attach a pipe to a flat surface. Are plumbing pipes not attached to walls sometimes? I realize that my panels, though on the delicate side, are probably wider gauge than normal house pipes. But still! So what the heck is it called?

Wow, thank you! Both of those are closer than I’ve been able to get. I’m amazed at the price of the pipe straps. I’m going to go back and read more carefully in case it’s for a package of 12 or something! I was thinking that the things I had in mind would be two dollars each max. But since I can’t even find them without help, I’m hardly an authority on their pricing! The pipe grip ties are a little bit more than I would need, having the screw that goes between the pipe and the wall. But again, very very close and maybe doable.

I don’t plan to buy online if I can find them locally, and now I have some words to go by. Thanks again.

I use the pipe straps for something similar to what you describe. I get a bag at Home Depot and or lowes. There’s 10 per bag and the bag is less than $20.

There seems to be different gauges of metal used. The ones I get are light but still metal. I’ve also seen them in plastic but figure they aren’t worth it.

Go to Home Despot or any other hardware store and go into the electrical aisle. Find the PEX conduit and with it you will find plastic doohickeys in different sizes to attach PEX to walls. They might also have metal ones in t same spot. If not, find an employee and ask to be taken to where they hide the metal ones.

Conduit straps would also work, to be found in the electrical department.

They come in all kinds of shapes, some like you describe, for different sizes of pipe.

Those are used to attach conduit pipe to walls and roofs and just any place or material.

I have used those to attach our panels to brick and wood.
Some are thick enough you can weld them to metal.

Try hardware stores, scroll down to see all kinds of those:

You are right, the prices are high today.

Maybe in the regular hardware you can find some straps that are not so fancy and so cheaper?

Are you using panels with drop pins or the kind that chain together?

For drop pin panels, I just use a very heavy gauge long shanked eye bolt, 2 for each pin, and drop the pins in. Holds the panel securely, I have had cattle ram into the panels and they do not pull free. This system also allows the panel to pivot if needed, and it can be removed without tools.

I put the eye bolts into 6x6 posts supporting the barn - lean-to - building, so YMMV if you do not have the same type of surface to secure the panels to.

If you do use pipe clamps, I would strongly encourage you to secure them with long lag screws, not simple decking or wood screws. It does not take much “sideways” pressure from an animal to rip out screws that are too short, too small of gauge, or without enough “grip”. I would NOT secure the pipe clamps to wood siding, either.

I did exactly what moving to dc did with eye bolts to the 6x of my barn. I wanted to ‘fence out’ the horses from the front of the barn to the front pasture gate. This lets me go in and out with trucks, feed, tractors, without fighting horses at the gate. I can easily swing the panels to mow, get tractors in or out, or let horses in there to ‘mow’ for me. I LOVE round pen panels, one of man’s greatest inventions!

Wow, those are pretty sexy and beefy pipe straps. I’ve used these:

Not as burly, but a heck of a lot cheaper!

Pipe/Conduit straps for “permanent” connection are what I would use. You want the heaviest duty you can find considering what kind of stresses might be applied and will want to be able to use lag bolts into a solid beam if at all possible. If there’s nothing study structurally on the building at that spot, you’ll want to consider sinking a sturdy 4x4 or 6x6 post right at the wall and connect to that as an alternative to fastening to the structure.

being cheap and conversation of labor (some call it lazy) I put up half of a 8ft 2by4 on each side of the panel where it dead ended into a building then put a face plat from 2by4 to 2by4 locking the panel in place which still having the ability to pivot it desired… about $1.50

I’ve used a lot of these clamps connecting Noble panels to wood posts. JoZ, I believe you’re in the Yelm area? The only place “local” I’ve found them is Kiwi Fence in Gig Harbor. If you decide to go out there call first to make sure they have them in stock.

something like this? http://media.robinsonsequestrian.com/media/catalog/product/cache/0/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/4/1/41426-01_2.jpg

I have bought similar items at TS.

There are also these things by Priefert, which would be great for those panels with pins.
