What registry? DRAFT cross ... F1 ... Get your popcorn out!

First, I am serious. We want to register our Clydesdale/TB mare. No verifiable parentage … I found my original notes from when we got her almost 7 years ago she is by Expect Greatness out of a Clyde/TB mare (which actually makes her F2, not F1). The purpose: to have some form of paperwork to confirm her age as she progresses and track for future possible breeding.

She is 7 yrs old now … she is very nicely put together. She is used in dressage, hunters, and eventing … true sporthorse. Last year was the 3’ over fences state champion.

Breeding in the future would likely be to a TB to further refine her.

What should we look into as far as registering her?

Well there is several registries that you could get COP papers for her foals from a WB stallion. Not sure about a TB cross. In Canada we have the Sport Horse group which focuses on sport horses and not particular breeds (like WB)

I think you could probably go with the Performance Horse Registry?

American Warmblood?

Society or registry? Although frankly I don’t even know if they have an AWR in my area.

I guess this is one of the advantages of having to have passports. Your mare here would be chipped and registered. Her passport wouldn’t have any recorded breeding but would still be identifiable by age, chip, and markings. As far as back in the States I guess your only options are a coggins and maybe a COP.

Hmmm passport … I actually could just get a USEF passport … I’ll have to check into that

If you register her with PHR, you can get DNA on file in case you decide to breed her. For purposes of a registry, it would seem that your choices are very limited, especially if you want to breed to a TB. AWS or AWR might be the only shot, and I can’t keep those two straight.

It is my understanding after I had several 1/2 drafts approved for breeding that csha changed the rules that only 1/8 draft or less could be registered. Although I have a 1/4 draft that can is out of a csha approved 1/2 draft mare that they will approve for breeding.

AWR does not take draft blood.

A qualified horse is one, which meets the following criteria:

  1. Has documentation of pedigree
    a) i.e. Jockey Club-registered Thoroughbred or similar for North American-born horses
    b) A crossbred that can document parentage but does not carry draft blood.

Eligibility for Registration

To be eligible for registration a horse/pony can be of any breed stock or combination thereof, except 100% hot- blood (Thoroughbred or Arabian) or 100% cold-blood (draft breeds).

There’s such a stigma to “American Warmblood” I’d register her PHR instead, so people don’t automatically assume the poor girl’s a nag as soon as you say she’s an American Warmblood.

If you ever breed her, choose the stallion carefully and at least you may be able to get some sort of papers from a reputable registry for the foal.

Thanks!
