What shall we spook at this Spring?

First time out for a hack around the fields yesterday, for the first almost-warm day since last Fall. All the horses either were being nutbags in the warm sun or sleeping in the warm sun.

It’s my belief that some horses pick something new to spook at each year, just to entertain themselves on the trail. This gets harder when horse is in mid-20s, as most things have already been tried. This year, it appears that the fella has chosen the stock tanks. Yes. The tanks suddenly are Very Dangerous because they were turned on their sides with the ice melting out of them. There was much snorting and blowing, staring at The Evil while dancing sideways, and even a very pathetic effort at possibly considering the value of a tiny rear, however, mom was already laughing and it was such a nice day… fella gave up spooking as being too much work.

Well you know, stock-tanks can house those no-seeum-goblins, and such. Fella was just keeping you safe!

Let me know if you two have any paces or events planned!! The trailer/truck is finally primed and ready for fun things this spring. :encouragement:

I came off my mare at the end of a conditioning ride on Saturday about 1/2 mile from home. I haven’t come off in over 10 years. I think maybe a squirrel spooked her? And I’m not sure why I came off- it wasn’t a crazy spook or anything lol and she’s been in full work all winter and we’d just gone over 12 miles. Yup- spring is in the air lol

Let’s see, this week it was rocks in the gully we’ve crossed numerous times (trolls hiding under them, didn’t you know) and his friend who we were riding with snorting behind him. Sigh, Spring for sure!

Trash cans next to the neighbors garage - They’d leaned them against the garage instead of standing them upright, which we all know is how a garbage bin stands right before they pounce!
Luckily the giraffe made it past them alive . . . this time

My husband was leading my little horse through some trees yesterday. Hubby’s coat scraped the trees and made a scrape-y sound.

Little horse had MUCH blowing and snorting about that ordeal!

Ground drove my mini for the first time this year and he completely ignored the backhoe, tarps, holes and craters dug up and various other junk stitting in one paddock (septic issues are so much fun) but kept looking in the one particular place that the 'devil squirrel" was known to hide before pouncing last year. What finally blew his mind was my husband coming out of the house and saying “Hi”. He took one look at DH and went straight up, hopping nicely several times on his hind feet before coming down and busting out a few more moves. He had me scrambling!

Last ride, one of the neighbors had the audacity to put a small FLAG in the flower bed. My gelding barely escaped with his life…

Well this counts as legit… On Sunday I went out for a short hack, and there was a woman and her daughter doing yard work. I motioned them to come over and my mare got some extra lovin’ as mom used to ride. It’s a dead end trail at this time of the year, so just after this I turned around, and the daughter was behind a tree picking up downed branches, twigs etc. The noise and sight of this set my little mare right off and I got a 3 second rodeo. Daughter was very apologetic. Of course a minute earlier, I’d been telling them what a nice reliable horse she is…

As for stock tanks, if they are turned on their sides, they are different. She will react strongly to that. Once she nearly had a meltdown over a small boulder that had been painted white since the last time she saw it.

Hahaha… spring! The big one here is cut up trees. Tress that have fallen down are fine, but once a human cuts it into chunks, the world is ending. Even worse, sometimes the human stacks up the fallen trees!!!

And stacks them near the trail we’ve been riding all winter. You’d think that there wouldn’t be any spooking considering that we trail ride all winter, but I guess that only makes it more suspicious when something shows up next to the trail and it wasn’t there before?

Mine was once spooked by a butterfly landing on her nose.

My previous horse spooked on a “first Spring day!” ride because, on the first lap of the hack around her familiar barn where she had lived for years, there was a bird on the fence, but on the second lap, the bird was gone.

One of mine spooked at a car last week, which is rich considering that we ride down the side of a busy highway to get to the trails, and that cars pass us on the dirt roads almost every time we go out. I think what happened is that we were both sleeping, just following along behind the horse in front of us and the car suddenly came into his field of view and startled him, because he’s not afraid of cars.

You win!
