Boarder asked me to deep clean her saddle and bridle prior to an upcoming clinic. She will supply cleaning equipment. TIA
It sounds like piece work, but it’s really hour work. How bad is her saddle and bridle? How much rubbing? How many soapings, how much application of “stuff”?
Tack is well kept and fairly new. Probably needs to be taken apart and given a good rub.
Hourly rates are very local in nature.
Around here (probably far from you) $15/hr is a decent hourly rate for part-time work for someone who will focus and do a good job. $18/hr is very good, and $22/hr is for skills/experience work that may also have a certification from a training program.
Take a look at the ads from agencies looking for workers for temp work. Look at the nature of the work – how much background to do it well – and the rates for that.
If you are skilled at tack cleaning, personally I’d put you at minimum $15/hour. Based on rates local to me.
If you think the job is 3 hours or less, I’d look at a higher rate just because this won’t be steady income and you are interrupting the rest of your life to do it. People are compensated to do short skilled jobs.
Suggest estimating the time you plan to spend, the level of your experience x own materials x effort, apply an appropriate hourly rate – and then just give her a flat $$ amount to do the entire job. So you aren’t tracking hours, you are just doing it for $xx.
Enjoy!
Thanks for your well thought out response! I am very skilled at tack cleaning and the whole project will take a little over an hour. I’m not worried about travel because she’s at the barn where I board one of my horses. I think I’ll charge $20 for the job. I’m in a very horsey area and this boarder is happy to pay whatever is fair.
Thanks again!
For one hour, $30 at least. It’s not worth doing otherwise.
If she brings you two saddles, $50 for both. It’s efficient, you set out and put away all your supplies just once, etc. Mention this two-saddle offer and you may end up $50 better off, while she gets 2 saddles taken care of.
Good luck!
Thanks for the tip! She does have two saddles. Hmmm
I would give her an hourly rate and a minimum rate. $20/hour with a minimum charge of $30 as an example.
Do not undersell yourself !
She knows you do a good job, which is why she asked.
that is all I had to add.
Thanks!
No worries, she paid me ahead, $35 and a big thank you!
Excellent! And I’m sure she is happy to have it done!
