what to cover the window with?

getting tiny bits closer to actually finishing the barn…10 months after signing all the papers lol…

We have our stalls going in against a wall. The wall is sided with 2" tongue and groove boards. The problem is that each stall has a 3 x 3 window in it, and we don’t have a cover for it. We have pretty mellow equines, but I’m obviously not going to leave the window accessible to them. At the end stages of this project money is obviously a concern and trying to be frugal and safe…can anyone think of any diy solutions that will keep them safe and still allow us access to the windows to open and close as needed? Thanks in advance!

well, regardless of what, if the window is low enough for them to look out, a wire grit of some sort.

But you are looking into suggestions for the see-through stuff?

I think - again, locations is everything - spend the money on the stuff with the wires in the glass.

how do the windows open/close-- are they sliders, or do they crank open?
If sliders, I’d consider horizontal bars–easily DIY with conduit.

Or, get some 1x4s and cut to create a 3x3 picture frame. Cut 2 pieces for each side of the frame, and sandwich some hardware cloth between them.
Mount your “window wire gate” on hinges on the side, so you can swing it inward to open/close the window, than swing back into position over the window and latch.

Bars, far enough apart for human hand/wrist, narrow enough that horsey parts can’t get stuck.

We have the window guards from these guys:

Thanks guys! Shipping is a killer, so we were trying to find something as DIY as possible. I think we are going to go with HungarianHippos suggestion for know. Simkie, are you still using yours now with the dutch doors?

Would something like this work:

Maybe held in place with fence staples?

We have slider windows and have used conduit. My husband used 2 x 4’s to frame the window and drilled holes for each of the conduit pieces to fit into it. Looks great and works well

Rip a 2x4 in half, drill holes with a spade bit for 3/4" conduit. Use some self drilling screws into a few of the bars to keep the whole thing together. Use a piano hinge on the bottom piece and a few screws on the top piece.

Nope, we took them down. Unsure what we’re going to do with them. Storing them for now. (Geez, is it ever easy to acquire PILES of scrap and assorted crap with a farm.)
