What to do for vet retiring?

Our (mine and neighbors’) equine vet has sold his practice and is retiring. The practice will continue as part of a regional group of clinics, but we’re all sad. He has been a great vet, practicing here for 44 years. If anyone has earned retirement, he has. We’d like to do something for him——any ideas or have you heard of really nice things others have done?

Does he have any interests or hobbies? A gift certificate and a heartfelt thank you card would be nice. Or a gift certificate for him and his significant other to a nice restaurant.

Bottle of champagne if he drinks, otherwise a gift card and a nicely written thank you card would be appreciated.

Would it be possible to get together a group of his clients & take him & his family to dinner?
IIWM, I’d contact clients via FB, my vet posts there a lot, so they get tagged.
If you could make it a Surprise, even better.
Maybe present him with the gift equivalent - knowing what he likes - of a gold watch?

These are all great ideas – thank you. I’m not on social media channels and I wouldn’t know which clients to invite anyway. There are hundreds! But maybe my neighbors and I—that’s at least 4—can do a gift certificate for him and his wife. I’l have to find out if he drinks wine or spirits. I kind of don’t think so, but I can ask the office team.

Spring for a catered casual lunch for the vet and office staff. Set it up to be at the office so they can work their eating around the practice activities and no one misses out on the food.

This might be difficult if the vet is on the road most of the day. As an alternative you could do a breakfast before he and his tech hit the road for the day.

The most meaningful gift would almost certainly be a letter from you telling him how much he has meant to you, and recollecting some shared memories. If he died, what would you wish you had told him? Write that.
