Going through old boxes and found one of all my YA faves, including most of the Black Stallion series with the old style cover art. I can’t bear to throw them away, but daughter is not into horses so really no point in keeping. Ideas? They are all well read and far from original condition.
see if there is a Half Price Books store near you (or similar store) , they will buy books (for a mere pittance) but at least the books may find a happy home later
Is there a used book store near you? They might take them, and even give you a credit to buy other used books.
How about a barn with plenty of young riders? The BO or trainer might like to put them out on the lounge for kids to take and read.
You may get some takers here, as we had a books thread on which some posters regretted having disposed of their beloved reads. If not, seconding the barn-rats idea. A summer camp session would make good timing.
I’ve donated a lot of books to our local food bank. They help in many more ways than just provide food to those in need.
We had some estate book store come to my grandma’s house…I didn’t know they even existed.
I donated 2K books to our local library after the last kid left: mine, DH, moms, and kids. Figured if I decided to reread one I could check it out from there. DH kept a few but eventually donated those too. My issue was dusting the “library” --ten floor to ceiling bookcases was a lot of work!
Our regular libraries won’t take book donations anymore, but we have a lot of “tiny libraries”—i.e. those small glass and wood kiosks where anyone can just take a book permanently that interests them or donate books. You can just pull up and add the books.
Also, if you live in a lower-income area like I do, teachers love to have books donated for their classroom.
I’d try a horse book Facebook page or local horse sale page.
This Etsy seller sometimes has pony books for sale. Perhaps you could contact her?

I usually put books in one of these Little Free Libraries. There’s a website listing locations or in my area most parks have one.
You could also find a 4H, Pony Club, etc that has younger kids and see if they would like the books.
This. How many are we talking about and would you mind PMing a list of titles? I may be interested in some. I actually just used my amazon gift card I got for Christmas for several just such old books.
Pony Club.
When I cleared my ex out, I was left with a pickup bed full of trashy crime/detective type paperbacks. The local prison was pleased to have them.
Goodwill.
I donated a ton of old books that were youth aged (anywhere from young kids to older teens) to a program that works with youth on supervision, to the juvenile correctional facilities, and to group homes and foster homes. I was an ISO so had connections to those programs, but you can definitely call a local office and have them connect you with programs that may be interested in donations. You might try shelters (especially women’s shelters) as there is a likelihood that there will be younger children there who may be interested in horses. There may be volunteer organizations that could use books… the one I worked with in my area was Reach Out and Read. Retirement homes are another option. If you are near a children’s hospital they may take donations as well.
Www.betterworldbooks. You pay to ship them but the cost is very reasonable if you use media mail. Better world books is essentially a giant online used bookstore and they donate a lot of their profits to communities in need. Edited to add I am a retired hospital librarian and hospitals do not want used books because of infection control.
I have been known to take them apart and scan them (if they are out of print) or are bulky magazines.
You still have the ‘book’ if you want to reread but you can email it to a friend to read.
I also have been known to copy books and scan the paper if they are too rare to take apart and look good on a shelf.
Our local library will take donations of books, in good condition of course. They go through them. If there is something that can go on the shelf they will add it to their collection. They have at least 2 book sales, so some of them will go to the sale. Anything leftover goes to Goodwill.
Another interested party here. We’re putting together a library for a lesson barn.
