What to price used Smith Worthington Saddle?

I’m helping a friend sell a few of her saddles.

Most are Smith Worthington, which I have little experience with. I’ve searched around on FB groups, eBay, Trumbull Mountain, and Pelham Saddlery to get an idea of what they sell for used. Coming up pretty much with dead ends.

Does anyone have any idea a general range they might sell for used?

One is a Smith Worthington Invictus, 17.5, I believe in a wide tree, but it’s adjustable. It’s in basically new condition, no visible wear, it’s less than 3 years old and has pretty much sat in a temp controlled room…same for saddles below.

The other few are from SW’s Stellar line, mostly 17.5 wide or med wide. Not sure on the models, but I can check. Some a bit more used than others, all in good-excellent condition.

Also, any ideas on where to market them would be great. I’m hoping not seeing many used is a sign that people hold onto them/they go quickly used as opposed to no one wants them.

Thanks!

I love Smith Worthington, but be aware that they are not a well known name and that will impact resale value. You probably don’t want to hear this, but I’ve picked up used Smith Worthingtons in great condition for < $500 on eBay.

You’ll see some listed at $1500+, but they rarely move. You’ll either need to list it at a low price, or hope you find someone who knows the name.

And yes, I’ve bought two new and know what she’s probably put into them

I would suggest listing them on some of the facebook groups - English Tack Trader, English Tack Exchange, High End English Tack, etc.

That’s what I assumed for the Stellar ones…I had higher hopes for the Invictus, which runs 4k new and got used very little due to horse injury.

Would Pelham or Trumbull Mountain be a better way to go? Or would that likely take much longer. I’ve only sold saddles through my saddle fitter and I get probably a little less money but it’s oh so much easier.

Yeah, I love S-W saddles, great workmanship and quality…but I was only able to get $400 for my older Maxx dressage (brown), even tho it was in excellent condition.

I would call Smith Worthington, in Connecticut. They are extremely accessible, and they also have an online page of their saddles for sale with prices, including used.

That is a good suggestion. I would also guess that a call to Pelham or Trumbull would be valuable. S-W are high quality saddles, but not well known, especially outside New England. Depending on their size (wide? very wide?) I might also target specific breed classifieds, like Morgans.

I didn’t check but I really admire fine used saddles and Patricia Cooper might offer an opinion

The thing is, even if someone knows the name, they probably also know that resale on them is lower than you would expect, given the initial cost, and therefore even that person isn’t super-likely to pay $1500.

I have a couple Smith Worthington jumping saddles and love them but there is no resale value. I tried for a year to sell one and finally just loaned it to a friend who needed a saddle like that.

A friend recently tried one that looked basically brand new…a $3200 retail one…for $350.

That said I love my SWs so once you decide on a price PM me details on the saddles, I am having a hard time finding a dressage saddle that fits my horse. I have a Stubben Genesis Special I love but it isn’t working on my horse at all. :frowning:

I just bought a SW monoflap jumping saddle this summer - LOVE it. Maybe there aren’t too many out there for resale because people really like them? Mine was the stellar line, so not the most expensive, however very nice workmanship, and cannot say enough about the company and support…good luck. Wish I needed another.
