What to wear showing in hand at Devon?

I’ll be slowing my horse at Dressage at Devon. I’ll be my first time showing on the triangle. Other than khakis, what can I wear? I look so frumpy in khakis. I’m sorry and average weight but khakis do nothing to flatter and make me look even shorter.

Would very dark straight leg jeans be ok?

What about shoes? I have sneakers but I’m a runner and all my sneakers are bright neon colors, which is the style right now.

I have paddocks that might look ok with some elbow grease.

My horse is flea-bitten grey. Im planning on a navy polo and my navy charles owen helmet. What to do with my bottom half?

Help!

Send me a pm and I can offer more suggestions, but at a minimum wear white jeans and running shoes. I’ve shown very successfully in-hand as an ammy and can give you some tips

The judges should be looking at the horse, so do not confuse them with like-coloured slacks, ie black legs and black slacks - you want the horse’s movement to show it off. Flea-bitten grey - you have choices. I’d not worry about frumpy!

Exciting for you.

Are you showing just in–hand or the Amateur Handler class? There are slightly different rules/etiquette for each. I’ll see you there! It will be my first time showing at DaD - figured showing in hand was the only way I would make there.

I’ll be doing her breed class plus the amateur handler. Thinking about the pony class too but don’t have a pony card. Not sure it’s worth the $ for a card. And I totally get you!!! In hand is the only way I’ll ever get to DaD too!

I would not wear jeans unless they are black or white or khaki colored. Basically, I’d only wear jeans if they can’t be distinguished from slacks from afar.

While it is about the horse, it is also a major show and you are expected to be turned out professionally. Denim blue jeans, IMO, don’t look like you made much effort.

Shoes don’t matter much so long as you are comfortable running in them and they aren’t distracting so you are drawing eyes from your horse to your feet. Paddock boots polished up are fine, your sneakers may be fine depending on just how “loud” they are. Black, white, or grey with neon trim, probably fine. Solid neon colored shoes may be distracting.

DR206.5 isn’t much help, it just says “conservative sports attire”. According to DR206.6, you do also have to wear a helmet.

Of course, you know your horse will match stride for stride with you - so you have to run with big steps???!
Meaning, the horse’s legs should show, not the footwear as long as it is clean and professional.

Hope you have fun.

It’s important to be comfortable- and also to disappear next to your horse. I always showed in Ariat paddock boots- only because they have the Reebok bottoms, and you can sprint in them- which is what it is all about. I generally wore black. This, of course, is in contrast with the professionals wearing white pants. However, one big old face rub or sneeze on that white? El Yucko. I also find the professionals who are wearing their farms logos to be incredibly distasteful- but, that’s just me! I showed as a professional- many years ago, and as an amateur, still some years back. Make it about the horse, and you can’t go wrong!
