I want to make 12 x 50 foot runs off my stalls. What type fencing should I use? Thx!
Practically all use pipe panels connected to each other, attached to posts.
Some lately are making panels or plain fence out of the newer 2" x 4" welded wire.
We still have some 1950’s old stallion pens made out of 2" well pipe and V-mesh woven wire that still look like new.
Several colleges equestrian facilities around here are putting in treated wood planks.
What some like about the more solid fences is that horses are less apt to get a foot thru and they won’t chew on each other, but still have good airflow.
Here are some pictures of the welded wire:
I boarded awhile back that used tall chain link fence., see, to work great… I have pipe & no climb mess, but a more solid material other than no- climb would be better., horses will scratch themselves & play and will rearrange any well hung no climb mess installation… Also, the horses will sleep a lot more out than in, so caution on rails and legs being caught if installed to low
You will love the runs as much as your horses., suggest putting gates at each end of the run to maintain the runs with fresh sand or grading, mowing them…
I like the hog panels as an option to no-climb. Put the narrower holes near the bottom, but still 6-12" off the ground.
I have field welded oil field pipe, which is solid as can be. But the material and welding is getting too expensive.
I boarded one of mine at a barn that used this (see pictures in link), and I LOVED it. The fencing with the wood post and rails going through. See pictures.
Around here, most I’ve seen that are narrow like OP is considering are done with pipe panels. One place has the most dangerous I have ever heard of, which is cable strung on posts (metal cable!). I was at a barn recently that had something like ToTheNines posted - wood posts with pipe rails running through, and I thought that looked nice and seemed safe.
