What Type of Cinch for Sensitive, Thin-Skinned Mare? And Size?

What type of cinch would be best for a sensitive, thin skinned horse? I’m currently using a smooth neoprene, but would like to switch to something different. My mare is also very cinchy, so something that is less likely to pull/pinch skin would be great. Also, I’ve tried a 28" (too short) and a 34" (too long). Should I get a 30" or a 32"?

Alpaca cinch is the best way to go.

mohair in a 30 b/c they do stretch some over time

Much as I hate neoprene since it doesn’t breathe, it’s the only thing that’s worked consistently for my fiance’s thin-skinned Arab. I even bought a beautiful ArtCords mohair string girth, and while that wasn’t as bad as leather, it still rubbed a bit or at least didn’t allow the rubs to heal. With neoprene, not only did it not rub more, everything healed up underneath.

Now I still prefer alpaca myself front and back, but I have a thicker skinned horse.

I use 100% mohair cinches from Dennis Moreland Tack. I have been using them for about 15 years and have never had them sore a horse. They are high quality and well wearing.

I am a huge fan of the fleece girths; I believe Stateline sells them.

Also double check to make sure the saddle fits, correct pad…etc…sometimes girthy horses are sore in their wither and back area as well

Thank you for your opinions. I’ve used mohair in the past on a different horse and was leaning that way. What about felt? Fleece may be an option also. Unfortunately, the mare came to me the way she is. I’ve only saddled her up a handful of times and she gets a little better each time. The saddle fits well and she recently had a massage and will probably have another one soon. Thanks again!

I recently got bucked off my sensitive lil mare using an alpacha type cinch. I switched to this Weaver Nylon Felt Lined Straight Smart Cinch.
It is felt backed and the metal buckles have the felt between them and the horse making a pinch impossible… the smart cinch aspect is nice .

What about an X cinch style?http://www.popwagner.com/Pop_Wagners_Web_Site/Mohair_Cinches.html

Scroll towards the bottom for the X cinch.

They work very well for round horses because they allow you to have more area involved in holding the saddle on, unlike just using the front cinch and cranking the heck out of it.

The same logic would apply here, I think, so a good choice. They do make your back cinch lie at a bit of a funny angle sometimes, but it’s mainly a visual thing.
