What vaccines do you use?

Normally I order from Jeffers. I like Encevac T and West Nile given separately. I went to buy vaccines this year and they no longer carry the same ones i usually buy. I always buy the same name brand every year because my old mare is sensitive.

My vet recommends Merck vaccines. What do you recommend? Which vaccine has the lowest side effects? My mare gets massive swelling at the injection site with Innovator vaccines.

I use Vetera vaccines. I started years ago, and choose them because they advertised a low adverse reaction rate due to additional filtering. I have a mare that reacts to other vaccines, but never (knock on wood) to Vetera.

I know it would be cheaper to buy my vaccines and give them myself -but since I can’t do rabies, I have the vet out and have him check over the gang, discuss feeding/supplements, Coggins, and give the vaccinations. By buying from him, I get what he approves and believes to be the best product --and he knows it was given, and given correctly. Actually, it’s kind of the highlight of my horsey-year --and hopefully, the ONLY time the vet is out . . .oh, he also takes samples and checks for worms . . .then recommends worming based on results --I buy my wormer from him.

I personally use either Vetera (BI) or Prestige (Merck).

I use Vetera vaccines for a couple of reasons. I worked for the company that developed them and the Calvenza '03 vaccine (there were 5 of us who worked for this company- all previous Bayer employees). Then later I was working for Boehringer Ingelheim when they took over the production as the Quality Assurance person in charge of releasing the antigens for production. One thing about BI is that while it is not required by the USDA they manufacture these vaccines under cGMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) so everything is scrutinized. (cGMPs are required for human and animal pharmaceuticals).

I would also use the Merck Vaccines - they used to be the Bayer vaccines (Bayer sold to Intervet and now it is all owned by Merck) - I worked at Bayer in the Quality Control and I have a good friend who is the QC manager at Merck so I know the quality is closely monitored.
