What would you expect to pay for.......

15 days in-clinic board at the repro vet
8 U/Ss
Spring shots
hoof trim
HcG inj
insemination (after vet chased down box of semen at FedEx hub)
Oxytocin protocol after insemination
crush/removal of large uterine cyst
uterine lavage
Oxytocin protocol after cyst removal

tallying…

reason for asking…I was really really pleasantly surprised when I got my bill and my real question is…is my new vet inexpensive or have I been getting ripped off for years?!

I guess that I should withhold judgement until the preg check, but I’m playing the optomist.

Any takers?

I’m guessing that answers will be all over the place

At our clinic mare care is $13/day

Breeding is charged on a per cycle basis, with the ultrasounds, HCG, insemination and oxytocin included in that fee. The per cycle/fresh cooled fee is $300; for frozen it is $400. The lavage would be charged separately, and it would depend upon what we were using to lavage. Cyst reduction would depend upon the method used; if it was simply a “crush” type of situation, probably no charge for a mare that we were doing the breeding on.
Our farrier charges $35/trim and we pass that on to the client, no holding fee. The only thing I don’t know off the top of my head are the vaccine charges.

Hillside, that sounds pretty much in line with what I paid this time, although everything was charged out seperately. Previously I have paid 28-35 per day just in board at the clinic I was using before, so quite happy.

I think it is a good deal then

When I read everything that you had done, I decided I would need to take out a second mortgage on my house to pay for it, if it had been done in CA.

Clint, you are making me feel much better!

I think I pay clint prices. It is $38 / day board at my clinic. My total for U/S insemnation, and 3 days board is usually about $1000. If longer, more.

Yeah…we’re pretty much in line with Hillside. $10/day board, $275/cycle for breeding which would include ovulation stimulant, oxytocin and cyst “removal” and lavage with just LRS or saline so long as no antibiotics were necessary. Trim would be $35, as well and vaccines, we don’t do on outside horses :). So, you would be at between $450 and $500 here. Fingers crossed that it’s a successful breeding for you!

This is what I was used to. I was really nervous when she was at the clinic for almost a month, plus I added vacs and she got trimmed. Then when they had to flush her and the vet had to drive to chase down the semen I was pretty well panicked at what my bill would be, but it totaled $900.

IronHorse-
We might use the same person, but I have to say that I switched this past year and I had my mares boarding at the clinic several times. My bills were half of what they were with a regular vet, boarding at an outside farm. I was thrilled. AND my problem mare is due next month for her first foal since '08!

Summerwood - your PM box is full! And yes, we are happy with the same vet now!

Yay for us!!! Sorry about the full PM box!!

I pay $400 per mare for the season for all ultrasounds and AIs. One mare got pregnant on her first cycle and the other missed the first time and was just rebred. I think there is an option of paying a mare management fee of $250 per cycle, but I prefer the “chute fee” concept. It creates incentive for my repro person to do everything right the first time and it manages my costs.

Board is $350 per month, trims are $30 or $35 depending upon the farrier, and I do my own shots so I am not sure what the charge is for that.

I bought a mare in California this year and paid $128 for an ultrasound, $68 for the ultrasound and $60 for sedation. The mare was on the next van Equine Express had headed to Texas and now she is with my repro person on the $400 deal.

400 per season!!! I am in Ca and have yet to be under 400 per cycle at home with any mare, and I have ny own dorm, oxytocin, and regumate. The clinic is 700 per cycle frozen not including board. Wow, it sucks to be in Cali, although it has been 75 with an ocean breeze for the past two weeks

I’m pretty sure a trip was around $600 (without all the extra stuff you are talking about). I want to say that a day of board is $25 (I think that is for mare/foal and it might be $20 if just a mare). I’m trying to remember though. I did not breed this year. So I would guess to pay $785-$850 I guess. (What did you pay??)

It has always been more expensive than the vet guestimates it will be (at either clinic I’ve used).

Farriers charge $35 for a trim around here.

15 days in-clinic board at the repro vet 15x$18 $270
8 U/Ss US at clinic 8x$30 $240
Spring shots $35
hoof trim $35
HcG inj $35
insemination (after vet chased down box of semen at FedEx hub) $35 inseminate and $100 find semen
Oxytocin protocol after insemination $30
crush/removal of large uterine cyst
uterine lavage Flush $60
Oxytocin protocol after cyst removal $30

Total $870

Iron horse- what clinic do you go to? I am in MI and am in need of a good repro vet/clinic.

Holy CRAP. Around here there is no way that would have been any less than $2500.00 bucks. Our costs are similiar to Sunnydays. If someone a repro clinic like that here they would put the others out of buisness.
