What would you pick Nutrena Safe Choice or Purina Senior

Hey folks,
I know there are many feed threads on here already, but if you had to choose between Nutrena Safe Choice Senior or Purina Senior, which one would you pick?

Horse has been on on Triple Crown Senior for 9 months and getting pickier by the minute about it.
I tried him on Blue Seal Low Starch (which my other horse is on) and he loves it, but said horse has problems with too high selenium levels, Blue Seal LS Se is 0.60ppm, TC is 0.50ppm.
It may sound like nitty gritty picking but both Nutrena & Purina Senior are only 0.30ppm, any little bit will help I guess, since his Se levels are staying status quo and just not going down really and I would like to get them in the normal range.

Trying to decide whether I go with Nutrena Safe Choice Senior or Purina Senior?

Thank you.

I personally would choose Safe Choice over Senior, my horses seem to prefer it/do better on it. However, without more information on your horse’s current lifestyle, age, exercise level it’s difficult to help.

Not sure what the nutrition requirements are for your horse. We fed Safe Choice one winter to our elderly gelding and it turned him into a fruitcake. He got very jumpy, spooky, and irrational behavior. Changed to Purina Senior and his behavior improved as soon as the change over was complete. It didn’t make sense reading the labels but that was our experience with it.

Thanks KLeaphart and My Two Cents , 7yr old warmblood in light to moderate work, was pretty underweight when he came here, but gained weight fast, likely thanks to to ad-lib grass hay & alfalfa in combo with TC senior.
No more weight issues at all, but he does have E/Se problems, Vit E deficient in spinal fluid as well as blood values, but too high blood level of Se.
I’m addressing Vit E separately from feed.

Else no real requirements, just trying to stay lower starch/sugar, with moderate fat, as I do with all horses, hence a senior feed.

My Two Cents, that is interesting, I will have to compare ingredient list at the store I think, since I can’t find an ingredient list for Safe Choice Senior nor Purina Senior online.
I am leaning towards Nutrena Safe Choice Senior, but reading your experience, not so sure anymore.

I think Nutrena is very slightly higher in NSC (20% vs 19%). So, both are much higher NSC than the TC. IIRC, what I tend to like about Nutrena is that it has no corn and Purina has ground corn.

I used to feed Purina Sr. My old gal did not want to eat the minimum required for complete nutrition - so she gets Purine Active SR. It’s not a complete feed so the daily minimum fed is lower (she has her teeth). I mix it with some Seminole Wellness Herb Blend because everyone likes it…

My young OTTB is fine on Nutrena Senior with no ill effects / hyperactivity.

My senior mare is on Nutrena Safe Choice Senior and has done very well on it. She preferred it to the Triple Crown Senior even though to me, the TCS smells better.
