What’s your horse’s favorite treat?

I know what my dogs can’t/shouldn’t eat, and what they are likely to enjoy, but I have a much smaller treat repertoire when it comes to horses. What do yours like?

#1 German Horse Muffins. My sweet horse would run down and kill me to get to an open bag of those.

#2 Carrots. I might be run over for those, too.

Those Renew Gold coconut molasses soft square cookies. They smell sooo good and my horses go nuts for them.

Yup, those German Horse Muffins. Apples tho, they take the prize. I think my mare would eat an entire bucket if I’d let her!

Apples, carrots, grapes, German horse muffins, stud muffins, mrs pastures cookies and peppermints.

His all time favorite is watermelon!

I specifically read this post to see if anyone would list German Horse Muffins! I use the Subscribe and Save feature on Amazon to keep my supply current. Literally my horse’s favorite - I’ll feed a few, and then he will lick my hand nonstop after. 🤣

Aside from the standard apples & carrots, my horses love watermelon and soda crackers.

My heart horse (RIP Duke) loved sour dough bread but it had to be fresh. He wouldn’t eat the crust, so I got that:)

German horse muffins. She prefers them over any of the other muffin brands, and we have tried them all. They also like fig newtons. Started as a way to get pills in and now they expected them regularly. Apples and carrots and enjoyed but not nearly as much as the others.

Bananas, apples, watermelon. Anything juicy and/or smushy that he can make a big mess with

Minty Muffins, carrots, those soft puff peppermints and peppermint nuggets / apple nuggets / carrot and spice nuggets are all favorites.

However, the only treat my horse will actually scream for? His daily vitamins. He sees anyone even go near the container and he nearly loses his mind with excitment. No one can figure out why he loves them so much- the rest of the horses at the barn could care less.

Pears. Goes crazy for pears, the older and softer the better.

Banana… peel and all. Also a great vehicle to get pills down their throat

Hilton Herbs Herballs. They are the bomb and sugar free/low starch!

Celerycrunchy and juicy

Raw/in-the-shell peanuts - great for extra fat, fiber & protein

Two of my horses will not eat the German horse muffins. I was so sad after buying them (they are not cheap). They will eat squeezy buns, but those German horse muffins are not edible at all. Push around the feed tub and ignore for days not edible.

And always welcome is Ginger Snaps.

They all love fig newtons too.

Bananas, apples, and carrots are popular.

I have a horse with all sorts of GI issues, so I am careful what he gets. I only give him these low sugar horse treats I find at Tractor Supply.

Most of mine will eat anything and everything with no particular preference for one thing over the other. But I have one who will only eat peppermints or peppermint flavored treats. So I buy 5-6 bags of peppermint flavored treats every time iI go to the feed store and it’s pretty much all any of them get these days!

German Horse Crack is too pricy for my Cheapskate Self
@ near $20/bag my 3 would bankrupt me in a month.
Luckily, they are all compleat Hos for Dollar Tree gingersnaps.
A bag lasts a little over a week, dispensed nightly, 3 apiece… And they can count

Morning treats - 4 apiece - are either the cheap ($6/5# bag) apple wafers or Dumor molasses treats.

They share an apple, cutup in their evening grain.

Yes, my horses are spoiled

I’m a clicker trainer so feed lots of treats, and all of mine like any kind of grain. Right now I have a feed room full of pelleted complete feed because I have an old toothless horse who lives on it, but the rest of mine like it too, so I use it for treats. It may not be as calorie dense as some kinds of bagged feed, but it has enough fiber in it that I don’t have to worry as much about overfeeding it if I want to extend a training session and feed more treats than usual.

Stud Muffins, but they are super pricey.

Most often he just gets carrots, which he likes, but I have discovered that the $1 oatmeal cookies from Aldi’s are almost as good in his book as the Stud Muffins.

Carrots. They won’t touch bananas and mouth apple chunks then spit them out. They do like peppermints.

Fig Newtons and the local shop’s brand of peppermint gumdrops. I can get the entire herd to come just by opening up a packet…
