What's a horse like this worth?

Perusing the horse ads and wondering if this horse is priced fairly. I’m helping a friend shop so wondering if this particular horse is priced right.

14.2 hands, 10ish years old. Has been with a trainer and has come along quite well for lower level anything, not over novice eventing, 2nd, 3rd level dressage. Can trail ride, hauls well, good for farrier, etc. Priced in the lower 5’s starting with a 2

Assuming its sound, thats about what a good, well managed, trained SAFE jack of all trades type will go for. For the right buyer, its priceless.

Thanks findeight. I was thinking the size would hold her back from serious buyers, an issue I had with the same type of horse a few years ago.

For a child or smaller Ammy, it shouldn’t be an issue. We aren’t talking rated Hunters or Big Eq here. Like I said, the right buyer wanting him for the jobs he’s proven he can do…and he’d make a dandy school or lease horse for somebody…

A 2’6’’-3’+ packer, 3rd level dressage, trail safe, horse 16hh+ would be going for $40k+ these days, so a pint-sized one I could easily see at $20k+. In fact, browsing Warmblood-sales.com just now, seems like a steal.

If it is true Dressage 2-3rd level with a show record, not knows how to shoulder in haunches in and lead change.

This sounds like a great bargain for an all around horse for child or small adult, particularly if they want to show Dressage or low level 3 Day. Even if it has holes in its dressage training, if it is sound and sensible could be a great find.

wording in your “ad” sounds like it has not been doing much and is with a trainer for a tune up. I think the price reflects a small size and somewhat narrow scope of possible buyers. If this had a permanent pony card and could find 8 jumps it would likely be very underpriced

Cool. When I sold my horse 5 or so years ago, the prices in the market hadn’t taken off and I really sold her much too cheaply but she has a stellar home and I get to see her all the time.

This would be my dream horse! A horse I can take trail riding, progress in dressage, and don’t need a ladder to groom!

If it could get a permanent pony card and has a lead change, it would be worth a lot more than that in hunter land.

The horse has been in a permanent training program all along. No tune up rides.

That’s exactly what I’m searching for…but I need a 1 and maybe not quite that much dressage.

Sounds under priced TBH. Eventing Novice and 3rd level dressage, plus hacks etc?

I would have guessed $35-$50k currently.

Has it only been ridden by the trainer? A super ammy/kid friendly version is priceless; a pro-ride version is a giveaway. The temperament/bravery/ common sense makes a huge difference in a lower level horse.

No, the owner shows and rides it regularly. She’s a good rider and has owned for a number of years. The ad does say she’s got some pony 'tude so not for a rank beginner.

I’m looking for something similar but have a few “must haves” regarding vetting, temperament, and training basics.
IF I ever find something my (green) kids and husband can handle, tack, and ride down a trail that I can show low level local circuits I’d pay up to mid 5 figures out the door. Your prospect sounds very close to that. If it’s a palomino gelding, look out. I may outbid you! Lol

Is the horse actually eventing at Novice and competing dressage at Second/Third with respectable scores? With a kid/ammy since that would almost certainly be the target buyer? If yes, then the price is fair. But the OP isn’t that clear - if it’s just saying that the horse should have potential to do those things then it may be overpriced depending on region and breed.

Just found out that the horse is not doing 2nd 3rd level but schooling those movements and showing at 1st. She’s not incredibly scopy so is limited to topping out at novice eventing when she’s schooled to that height. It is indeed potential for these things. I didn’t have all the salient details when I first posted.

Well….with those added details, it probably belongs under 20k. How much under depends on area and actual rideability.
